I was talking to a man yesterday who a has furd superduty v10 gasser. He said that he test drove a 2011 superduty with the 6. 7 powerjoke of which he was impressed, except for the $60K price tag and it wasn't even a king ranch. The man I was talking to told the salesman that he would buy the truck if furd put a Cummins in it. The dumb salesman told him that furd couldn't do that even though furd owns Cummins. I'm not so sure that I convinced him that furd doesn't own any part of Cummins.

I think people get the whole Ford/Cummins idea from the fact that Ford offered the 5. 9 Cummins in their medium duty trucks for years. It seems to me that Ford just admitted the Cummins is a heavier duty motor by making it an option in their heavier trucks.

There is no doubt about the accuracy of your statement.

For several years the same little ISB5. 9 that powered our Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups was offered as one of the optional engines in Furd's F-650 and F-750 so-called medium duty trucks. I haven't seen a Furd F-650/750 brochure in several years, the ISB6. 7 may be offered now.

That jest go to show you that the most sale people does not know their A-- from a hole in the ground. When I go to a dealer I ask 4 questions if the sale man can not answer 3 of them I look for a new sale man.

The reason that the Ford guy said that Ford owns Cummins is due to the fact that International(the company that makes powerstroke) bought out or merged Cummins a couple of years ago. I think the only thing that is stopping them from putting Cummins in Ford is the contract that they have using powerstrokes, or the contract that Dodge has with Cummins.

In the late 80's, early 90's as Ford lost sales numbers to Dodge, FoMoCo bought Cummins stock. They didn't own a controlling interest. They later sold the stock.

This I got off the internet, looking up "Ford owns Cummins" last fall after arguing with some dumb a@@ about the subject.

I don't know if it is the "truth" but seemed reasonable to me.

madmanmanick,

Furd does not own any part of Cummins, nor does International Navstar for that matter. Furd owned a very minor amount of Cummins stock many years ago, but Cummins bought themselves back because they didn't want furd to own any of their stock.

Just a few years ago, Ford barely owned Ford, no thanks in part to the almost 1 billion in warranty claims and buybacks on the 6. 0.

With the departure of Caterpillar from the on-highway market, Cummins is the only engine offered in F-650 and F-750 trucks. I don't know how many Ford buys from Cummins for these trucks.

They really talk it up, as they should!

This is the same thing that I've heard several times. I can see them buying stock in Cummins in the early/mid 90's, I wish I had also. Cummins stock was cheap back then and they were poised to make big market gains.

There is NO WAY Ford owns Cummins. It would be counter-productive to install your engines into another competitors truck, give technology to another competitor, all the while NOT use the engines for themselves. I actually had a Ford Dealership Service Advisor try and tell me the same thing. Its amazing how UN-EDUCATED some "professionals" in the industry really are.

What's happened to this thread. There are two post that I can't open.

ford went with the cummins engine at the time because it was the only engine on the market they could use. their in house 6. 6/7. 8 engines, as well as the 8. 2 detroit and 3208 cat, were all slated to be axed for emission reasons. gm beat ford to the punch on the new 3116 cat engine, and international engines were only available to ford for the light duty line. after many years of having no option but the 8. 3 and 5. 9 cummins, ford finally scored the 3126 cat and the 7. 3 powerstroke as options. at this point , they had three different diesel engine makers to choose from.
