On a '97 and most likely older and newer rigs as you are looking at the dash side fuse box from outside the truck there is a round silver cylinder at the upper left that isn't accessible because the dash covers it.

Anyone know what it is? Service manual is of no help.

Working on a truck this weekend the cylinder got hot, wonder if it has anything to do with the underhood and dome lights as they were the only things on.

Look more closely at the FSM, two or three screws attach the fuse box to the dash frame. Once the kick panel under the steering wheel is removed it will allow the fuse panel some movement inward. The wire looms are so stiff, it won't fall in your face or anything though.

Thanks Andy, I knew the fuse box moves back but am still wondering what this device is that gets hot. I'm sure if I searched the FSM it's in there somewhere but you know how searching though the few hundred pages of electrical can be.
