I wonder what New Venture thinks of this?

Word has it Dodge is finally developing a real transmission,I was told by a good source it will be as good or better than the Allision/ Ford transmission. This is the news we been waiting for,I've heard good reports about the new Ford transmission, maybe Dodge will finally figure this long time problem out.

We'll wait and see when it comes out!

Hopefully it will be a lot better. The GM Allison is not very strong and has a hard time holding up to more H. P. I had a transmission place tell me that even if you rebuilt the 47re and the Allison, the 47 would be stronger and it would perform better for drag racing.

What about the 48re? I thought it was doing alright?

'course, in my opinion, no automatic will ever be as bulletproof as 'ol Ironcase (the NV5600)!;)

I think most people have made it clear the main reason they own a Dodge is because of the Cummins. It is the best diesel engine out there. Whethter you like Chevs or fords or not(most of you do not to the point that rational thinking goes out the window) they both have a better automatic transmission than the Dodge does. The 48RE is better but you still need a lockup switch, the converter is still weak, it's a 4 speed and doesn't have a tow/haul mode. I love the Dodge truck, not because it's a Dodge or just because it has a cummins diesel but because I try the others and it is superior in almost every way. That being said I'm driving an 03 Ford with the 6. 0 with the 5 spd. auto transmission as my work truck right know, I also have 03 and 04 Dodge diesels, I have had no troubles with the engine or transmission YET with 20000 miles. The transmission works great, the motor has good power once you get going, there is alot of lag on the bottom end and it's no cummins. The rest of the truck well it's no dodge. My point in all of this is Dodge makes the best truck, has the best diesel motor but has the worst automatic transmission,it's about time the change that . Of course that's just my opinion and in the grand scheme of things that probably doesn't mean s**t.

Walcott,

I read that DC will be launching a 6 speed automated manual in the Freightliner trucks this spring. It is a Mercedes 6 speed manual countershaft transmission with automated shifting and clutch - there is no clutch pedal. Just my opinion but I think it would make good business sense to offer this as an option over the 48RE in the RAM application - it's already made by DC, and it would solve the exhaust brake issues that the 48RE has. Probably too logical to happen, though.

If it was only that easy!

This would be waaay to simple for the DC people,It makes too much sense,It would works to well, they just don't see things for what they are. Get my drift?Seriously I don't know if this is the same transmission.

Alan in AZ,

Happy Thanksgiving!!:D :D

If only it were that simple, the transmission is way to large physically to fit in our current trucks.

Great idea though. I really don't think our cummins needs any more than 4 speeds though, especially with that awesome torque curve this year. :D :D :D

the torque curve is nice, but if we had the same torque curve as the vgt equipped 5. 9isb motorhome engine, that'd be sweet. [can be seen in pdf format on cummins' website. is as flat as a board from 1400 to almost governor]
