I have a 2005 DA3500 with a G 56 transmission, this transmission has had an overhaul under warranty at 50,000 Kilometers or 31,000 miles for both bearing noise and high torque chatter going from 4th to 5th gear.

Now this transmission has failed again, both 4th and 5th gears show high heat and wear and the syncro at 4th-5th gears has blown and bonded to the main shaft. the oil smells worse than elephant puke.

Have bought new factory G 56 and this transmission shifts fantastic as a transmission should and nowhere like the old one. has anyone had this problem, as Chrysle has said take a hike. I need to know what caused the this failure.

The only causes that I can think of would be a bad case, or the CNC work is off slightly.

Does anyone out in the mechanical have any ideas as I am fresh out, and no new thoughts.

Bill sorry about your bad luck. I am no mechanic, nor a salesman, but I did put fastcoolers on my G-56 and changed to a fully synthetic Amsoil ATF + 4. Hope your new one lasts and lasts.

There is a great article in the TDR mag Issue 53 on the G56 over the NV5600 and it is what convinced me to order my C&C with the G56 instead of the Aison Trany.

Do you have a picture of your fast coolers, and place of purchase

I thought the G56 was an aluminum case... sort of moot point to add fast coolers other than extra capacity.

Sorry Bill , I don't have any pics, never have put any on here, need to learn. Steved, I don't know but I would bet they went to aluminum because of weight issue, not cooling? But you are right, cast iron stay hotter longer than aluminum e. g. old panhead HD and shovelheads vs EVO and twin cam. I just happened to be at Olee's, getting some work done and liked idea of more capacity lubricant.

Why did Dodge tell you to "take a hike" I'm curious to know more details about this scenario. Stock truck? Modded? Heavy towing? Inquiring minds need to know... ...

Aluminum is also cheaper to cast as well as a weight reduction.

My point about it being aluminum is the fact that, not unlike an aluminum transfercase, they would sort of be self cooling by design and not need the added coolers. . but the added fluid capacity is probably still a good thing.

It would be interesting to see if someone has obtained G56 operating temperatures (much like owners of the NV5600 have done). I wonder how those temperatures compare to those of a NV5600... probably a less overall since they are using ATF, not gear oil, that is more prone to being compromised by heat.

I am curious as to why they rebuilt your transmission, I am sorry if my motor or transmission, or axles blow up in the warranty period, they are going to unpackage the unit from a crate and install it in the truck, there will be no rebuilt parts on my truck, I suspect doing a rebuild on your trans was likely the problem, I would complain loudly to the dealer, that their rebuilt POS trans blew up and that you would be expecting a new one put in free of charge

That's right cummins cowboy. My wifes S-Type Jaugar Auto trans started acting funny. Warranty was still in effect. They said it needed "reprogramming" --- same problems after 2 weeks/ She took it back and S. Manager said "Oh, I've got one just like it and that is normal. My wife made him get in with her and drive it and same problem. I have to give them credit------They put a Brand New from Factory transmission it it, said they don't put parts in a situation like that, just put new in. Good for Jaguar, I think Ford owns them.

I changed the oil in my G56 to Amsoil ATF +4 and had a guage installed at the same time. I do not know what the temps it operated at before but now it runs most of the 100 to 140 degrees and some times up to 180 degrees. I have not pulled the trailer yet since I installed the gaguge and changed the oil.

WOW! I would not expect to see temps that high with ATF... even ATF+4. I would expect to see temps that high in a manual, but that's high for the fluid IMO...

That's not to high for ATF, you figure the coolest your auto runs is 195, since it is cooled by engine coolent. ATF should last forever at those temps, the only reason you change it is to remove the deposits.

Considering those are UNLOADED temperatures, I could see easily peaking into the 250*F range based on my NV5600's numbers when towing even moderatly heavy.

That was what I was saying. And being the G56 has NO coolant or external cooler like an auto... well you get my point.

Cowboy ,

I've heard too many stories of rebuilt or after market parts being used at dealerships. I know of two Ford Superduty automatic transmission's that were replaced with a "remanufactured unit". Body parts ,windshields and other windows are not OEM parts.

I've been at the dealership waiting for service and have seen countless times where the parts truck show's up with some non OEM fenders , door skins etc for a body job on a brand new truck.

You think you're gettin' factory Chrysler parts for the warranty repair ..... not always.
