2001 Dodge Diesel 4X4, Quad Cab. Dealer ordered Steering box #p52113500 AC It arrived today and has these numbers and words on the steering box assembly. . TNG1740G1494 , 26001484 , GMSM16, also 84. Guys did I receive a Delphi Box (Hope So) or G. M. Saginaw Box? My new truck steers loose and wanders, terribly. Will install next Tuesday, anyway, but hoping it's DELPHI Box.

Mine had DELPHI stamped in letters about 1/4 inch high. I didn't see all of that other stuff. Flip it over and look on the other side of the assembly. Another thing. . the GM Saginaw assy that came off had two dobs of yellow QA paint on a couple of bolts. The DELPHI assy has yellow and blue paint dots every where something could be checked. Finally, I forgot to tell you this in the other post but it is an interesting point to look at.
When they were removing my old assy, the pitman there was not enough room between the Pitman arm and the gearbox with the arm installed on the shaft, to get the puller in for removal. The Pitman arm was touching the gearbox. On the Delphi, the splined shaft (which is tapered) got to its full sized 1/4 inch from the gearbox. That means on the new installation, the Pitman arm can't rub or bind on the box assy itself. That may be what the problem is with the GM box. When it is installed, make sure the hydraulic lines don't touch the frame or you will hear and feel a howling noise when you touch the brakes and when you turn the wheel. Good luck.

I know they are the same company but there are clear markings on the Delphi indicating it is Delphi. I don't know if there has been a design change as the Delphi's Splined Pitman arm shaft is definitely a little longer or at least made now so that a puller can be installed to get the arm off the shaft. When I looked on their web page I think that it was the 708 assembly that they are now using. I emailed them with no response. I know mine sure drives a heck of a lot better. No more wander. Hey, Dawg... they will probably have to reallign the front end. Don't let them get away with just resetting the tow. Get the camber and caster checked and set if necessary.

I just found out today that the bottom bearing on the steering box (at the Pitman arm) on my '98 2500 is bad. $685 for a new box. Rebuilds apparently not available. Aftermarket apparently not available.
Ideas?
If I get *real* annoyed with it, I'll check the boneyards for a used one.

I did see a post within the past couple of weeks about an aftermarket box but I can't remember who sent it. Scan back through them. I believe the post stated that someone is getting ready to come out with a new replacement.

I talked to AGR about two weeks ago and they claimed to not have anything out yet for my truck, so I don't know if they will be able to help you yet. They have a website at www.agrsteering.com you might give them a call or drop them an email and see what they say.

My question to AGR:
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummins Diesel, I am wondering if
one of your gear boxes would be advantagious to me for a better steering
truck, I have a slight steering wander and wish it was a bit tighter. Also
do you have an intermidiate shaft for this truck, mine has gone south
already and was wanting a better setup, what is the waranty on these items?
This is AGR's response to my question:
We currently have been addressing the issue of the wander problem on the new
dodge Cummins trucks, Due to the poor geometry
Of the front end plus the weight form the motor, there is a lot of stress
and side to side movement on the bottom sector shaft of the box. WE have
introduced a Hydraulic RAM assist to our product line that will assist the
gear box. It will be mounted on the front end, replacing the shock
stablizer, and feeding off a special modified gear box. We will also be
coming out with a better bearing design and casting to help the lower shaft.
We have worked with desert trophy trucks for years and have many hours
experience
Testing and re testing this system, and it has proven to work flawless for
any application. Look for it on 4x4wire.com where they will be installing it
on a 2001 DODGE. Also look at www.samsoffroad.com for a few pictures.

well at 12,000 started out as a slight clunk, then after wheeling a bit it turned into a louder clunk, then later that day the steering wheel was cocked about 45deg then it was time to go to the dealer. They did an alignment, re-centered the steering wheel, then I had a horrible steering wander and still a bad clunk, so yesterday went back to the dealer and he said the intermediate shaft was history; why they did not see this before I do not know.

New steering box ordered today for mine. On the 4th trip to the dealer to try to find the root of my steering problems, they discovered the pitman shaft is loose. 4800 miles on mine, but it's never steered right from day one. Starting to sound like a common problem. Let's say it all together, now. RECALL!!!!

Dealer installed new steering box PN# 52113500 AC. Sorry, it was another G. M. Saginaw box, not Delphi. Still has same loose steering . How do you get the Delphi box. I'll call that dealer in Georgia today to see if he can help. Sooner or later I will get a Delphi, even if I have to drive to Georgia. Love my Quad cab 4X4 Diesel except fot the Lousy steering!
