I have always been a fan of Garmin. I have had several. If I were you i'd go to alt. satellite. gps and ask it there. Those guys have GPS fetish going on, and if anyone can make a suggestion they can. I'm a groupie there too :D

I am a laptop / Delorome User. I find that with a laptop it made sense to tag up a GPS with it. Stop by any hotel parking lot and update routes , grab mail , watch a movie (Alltho HIGHLY illegal in most areas ;) ) wirelessly and keep rollin.

I'm partial to Garmin, never cared for the Magellan interface. I've got a Garmin GPS V that I've used in both my Jeep and CTD. The only real issue I've got with it is that the Mapsource database sucks rocks once I get out of the major metro areas. I go to a lot of places where they just don't have data.

TMTT is right about the Delorme. I've been using StreetAtlas for several years, just haven't set up the wiring to hook my portable up in the truck. SA's street detail just plain rocks compared to Mapsource.

I've narrowed it down to the new 60c for versitility (car to car to truck to motorcycle and camping etc) beeps at way points and computer compatible.

Noew the question is where to get the best price. Oo.

Give www.gpsnow.com a look. Make sure to "Place item in cart" and then check the price. Looks like you can get it a little over $300 w/the rebate. I've ordered from them and their parent company 4x4books.com several times with no problems.

Garmin 182C

For what it's worth ...

When I drove long haul, I used a Garmin marine unit (182C) and had great results. The unit has a very fast refresh.

I'll be picking up my new '05 Ram 3500 on July 1st and the Garmin is going back into it as well.

Good luck with what ever you choose.

I use a Garmin GPSMAP 276c (Marine Chartplotter). I had an old StreetPilot (first one Mono screen) for 6 years. I upgraded to the GPSMAP 276C because it has a screamming fast processor that updates VERY quickly and you can use it for Marine or Auto uses. I travel to jobs via airplane alot and use rental cars often, this unit has a rechargable battery, and was the main reason I bought it. A lot of rental cars have lighter plugs that don't work and I wanted to have a battery in case I got stuck in a rental with a bad lighter plug. I switch the GPS unit between my truck, rental cars, my wife's car, our boat, and a friends motorcycle all very easily. It has a nice big screen with anti glare treatment on it, and you can actually still see the color screen - even in full sun light.

I have had several Garmin products. Always been pleased with them. My latest is a 76c that I use in the truck and the boat. Here is a shot of it in the truck.

Good choice on the 60c. I just picked one up and I really like it.

What about mapping software. Garmin thinks really highly of there stuff. I saw microsofts streets and trips mapping software with rebates is down to 15 bucks and its supposedly compatible, What do people use? What works well... .

I have the garmin street pilot 3. , had it for more than 3 years and just love it. bought it from gpsnow.com and they were great to deal with.

I know this is an old thread, but I just purchased a Magellan RoadMate 760 and I'm totally satisfied. I haul horses all over the US for a living and I needed detailed maps on board. I haven't left on a trip with it yet, but I tried to get it lost yesterday on some old state forest and old township roads ... ... ... it huing right in there.

  • 2gb hd with detailed maps of US and Canada
  • shortest, quickest, most use of freeways, least use of freeways routing options
  • auto re-route if you make a wrong turn
  • auto detour if are slowed (<15mph) on a freeway for a predetermined amount of time
  • trip planning up to 20 destinations X3 users with trip optimization in order of shortest to farthest
  • 3D 3. 8" touch screen
  • voice commands
  • completely portable
  • 7 million points of interest, including fuel, food, lodging, car care, hospitals, parks, camping etc etc

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of details, but this is off the top of my head.

Here's a stupid question:

I've been looking at GPS for a while now, and I'll get on the GPS forum & look around, but this is what I'm looking for. Something like what Hardwick just got, but I don't want it limited to roads. I just picked up a serious CJ-7 for back country wheelin' and I wondered if they all can trace routes on topograghy maps as well as roads. Something like a hiker or hunter might use. Is this a standard feature, or do they specialize in one or the other? I'd like one that combines roads & the features of the Garmin on my boat, but over a topography map. Anyone know if they all do this?

Very good question. It come loaded with something like 7 million POI (points of interest). These are things like I mentioned above, all the way to churches, airports, roadside tests yadda yadda. In addition, it comes with POI software to setup custom POI's on your computer and D/L into the unit. Beyond that, you can save locations and upload them into the POI manager on your computer for editing, managing etc. While I'm sure off road POI's can be stored and managed, I'm thinking it'll take you from one to another as the crow flies. I've borrowed a marine/hiking handheld for off roading on horseback (trail blazing) that tracks your actual route ... ... ... . I don't *think* this one will do that, although it'd still keep you from being lost by saving waypoints.

I have a Garmin eTrex Legend. Got it back in 01, when GPS units were in their earlier stages. I'm surprised it's still on the market these days.

Works great, the only problem I've had is I find the screen to be too small. For long trips, I plug in the laptop to it.
