G3 Straight Pipe Sound

Now that there are a lot more guys around with straight piped 3rd Gen trucks... what is the comparison to 2nd and 1st gen trucks? I heard that the 3rd gen trucks sound funny because of the three stage injection... could you guys make a comparison in sound to me????



Does anybody know of some sound files I could download of a straight piped 3rd gen truck?



I heard one a couple of months ago, but the pipe was pointed away and I couldn't get a real good earload.

I ran a straight pipe for a few months, just way too loud. I installed a dynomax bullet muff no loss in performance, egt's still low, and still loud it just takes the crack out of it when you stand on it

I would like to know why those muffler elimination kits are so expensive. I got my truck straight piped at a local muffler shop and it was $15. They did as good of a job as possible too.

I had a straight pipe on mine for 2 days. It sounded like a Honda. I put on a Magnaflow straight through muff and am happy now. My advise to you is don't be surprised when it sounds nothing like the earlier trucks. Get you a straight through muff and it will sound good.

on the mufflers you each used to replace the striaight pipe, are they on stock/factory exhaust systems? If so, how difficult was the install and what are the part numbers for each?

I used Magnaflow p/n 12771. Its 27 inches long and 7 inches in diameter. Got mine from bigexhaust.com for around a C-note. I cut the necked down part of the tailpipe so that it slide inside of the muffler. Then cut the intermediate pipe down enough to take out the slight bend so that it was a straight shot from the front of the truck. I used about a 2 1/2 ft piece of aluminized 4 in pipe with an adapter form 4in to 3 1/2 in. to connect the intermediate pipe to the muffler. Clamped it all together with stainless band clamps and welded hangars to the pipe and muffler attaching them to the factory rubber isolators. Has worked well for 6 months and sounds much better too.

mine was about 40 bucks, you can get it from summit, all i did was cut stock muff off w/ sawzall and weld it in place with some 3. 5" tube to make up for cut off length

Question from the ignorant...

Do the '03's and 04's have both a resonator and muffler as do the older second gen trucks?

My 03 only has the muff, no resonator. Maybe the resonator is a California thing?
