I may have stumbled on one of the reasons that the 4x4 trannies get in such bad condition. With the rear of the main shaft supported by the engagment into the transfer case, the pocket bearing can go out and shed metal into all the working parts before the transmission acutally dies in the road. The additional support holds the main shaft in a workable position as the pocket bearing continues to erode to nothing. I have some pictures if any one is interested, of a recent tear down that turned out to be non repairable due to the expense of parts. Bottom line, if you want the transmission to last, you might want to check it from time to time as to preload on the shafts and inspect the magnet in the bottom and if there is ANY black metal flake, stop using the truck immediately.
Some times the input and main shaft are fused together by the pocket bearing and in those cases, the problem can't be run on. Actuall less damage than if it continues in service.

Edit spelling error, not my long suit.
