My G56 rattles in 5th gear when not under a load, typically just cruising or de-accelerating. It is not as bad in 6th gear. My dealer says that Dodge is aware of the problem and are supposedly working on a fix. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a TSB or something on it?

My 5th gear has always felt different than the others as well, almost like it hangs for a second before going in gear. I noticed there is a TSB for the G56's jumping out of reverse, and it gives a caution not to disturb the 5th gear synchro, as it can easily come apart when the reverse syncro is removed. I'm not sure how all that is layed out in the transmission, but I have wondered if their is a reverse/5th gear connection. My truck will loudly pop out of reverse sometimes, but I've not had a chance to get it taken care of yet. The TSB number for "Transmission Jumps Out of Reverse" is 21-006-06. Thanks.

Gear Rattle

My fifth gear rattles too. If you lightly pull back on the gear shifter, it goes away. I guess I need to pull the "box" and pay Dodge a visit.

my old 5 speed rattled bad in 5th under load with added power. 5th gear is direct drive, and I think the fact the shafts were all moving the same speed caused some kind of vibration.

SRowley,

My G-56 has had the 5th gear rattle from the day I took delivery (it has 7,200 miles now). Since this gearbox shifts sooooo good, I decided to live with it instead of risking having my dealer mess it up in the process.

BTW, my 5-speed '99 Dakota had the same exact rattle in 4th gear (direct drive).

ENafziger,

Mine used to "pop out of reverse" going down a hill and it also used to feel like it would hang up going into 5th. When I brought the truck in for the poping out of reverse problem, the dealer replaced the whole transmission per Dodge. My new transmission shifts much better and no longer pops out of reverse. I can live with the 5th gear rattle as long as it is not a sign of future trouble. Like the other guys were saying, because 5th is one to one, I could see how there could be extra noise due to the direct drive.

When I took my truck in for a lite rattle from the trans, they had to tear the trans apart. I was told that the first run of trucks that were built for 06 had a problem with the countershaft not being positioned in the case properly. This caused the bearings on that shaft to go bad and ruined the gears on it as well.

The dealer tearing the transmission apart really scares me. Were you getting the rattle in 5th gear like me or were you hearing it in neutral at idle? I wonder why there isn't a TSB on this if they went in your transmission and positioned the countershaft properly?

It rattled both at idle and while in gear. It didn't seem to matter which gear it was in. Don't know if there was a TSB out on this or not. When they finished the truck they told me there was still alittle noise, but it was as good as it was going to get. I have no doubt in my mind it will be back in for the same problem soon. The good as its going to get comment does not sit well with me. I am glad I payed for the 100,000 mile extended warranty.
