I'm planning on replacing the clutch on my 06 w/ the G56 transmission. Are there any tips/tricks? I will be converting to a solid flywheel. Last clutch I changed was on my 02 HO 2500 and I had an issue of the TDR handy with detailed pics, Was very handy. Do I need to support the front of the motor like I did on the 02? Any hidden electric plugs/wiring I should be aware of? Any other words of wisdom?

Thanks,

Ian

Ian,

The one thing about a G56 that is different than others is that you can take your manual transmission and clutch hat off and put on your (I hate to say it) automatic transmission hat on to remove the G56 trans and it's ENTIRE clutch, disc and dual mass F/W as a complete package, leaving it on the input shaft of the trans untip removed. The advantage is this requires a LOT LESS room to back it off of the engine by 1" or so and just start dropping it down. If you take it off one piece at a time, it can be done for sure, but you are left with a 50+ Lb F/W hanging on the engine that all of the bolts are removed from the front side, a bit awkward.

The G56 is bug and bulky. Be careful.
Also, with the solid flywheel, there is quite a bit of gear rattle at idle. Really bad gear rattle if you lug the motor. No more shifting like a Honda.

I wonder if the "new" rattles with the solid flywheel will be less than the noise this clutch makes now?

I looked yesterday at the underside and saw two elec connectors and the vent. Are these the only connections(other than bolts and such) to undo? Also, do I need to support the front of the HPCR like I did my 24valve?

Thanks,

Ian

you do not need to support the engine remove the transmission with the transfer case together. like he said the bolts on the bell housing are hard to get to you will need some wobbly sockets and a 18"to24" extension. the southbend conofe kit is the best. it has a solid flywheel with a real pilot bearing and new hydraulics. it will be a little noisier. before you put the shifter back on fill the g56 1 quart over full.

I prefer not to hang the clutch and dual mass flywheel off the transmission input gear when removing the transmission/bellhousing as a unit. Thus, I don't act like it is an automatic and unbolt the dual mass flywheel from the flex plate on the crankshaft first. Remove the pressure plate and disk. Remove the access plate on the passender side of the block plate and unbolt the flywheel from the stamped steel plate that attaches to the crankshaft. You might also look at my discussion in TDR Issue 68, p. 88.

I just had the single disk G56 conf kit installed, the stock clutch was shot along with the dual mass flywheel. The South Bend kit is awesome almost no rattle or gear noise except when coasting. My only tip is don't let a shop do the job for you. My truck went into the shop with out any leaks came out ofthe shop leaking transmission/trans fluid. The shop removed the transfer case and screwed something up now I'm waiting to get it fixed again... ... .
