Rail pressure gauge, how do I read it?

I read somewhere that the g56 uses 6 quarts of fluid but can only be filled with 4 quarts at filler hole. Does it take 6 quarts and is there a way to fill it without pulling the shifter?

Did you pull the shifter to overfill? I used the standard fill hole. I think overfill was recommended for some of the initial 05. 5' from the factory only. I also added the transmission filter and changed transfer case fluid at the same time. Can't tell for sure how much ATF+4 the transmission took.

G-56 capacity.

I replaced mine on level ground w/6. 25 qts until it ran out of filler hole. I used Amsoil Universal ATF and it seemed to improve shift quality somewhat.

I had the same experience as Bajabob above. My 06 took about 6. 3 qts. filling it through the filler hole. I used Amsoil ATF and purchased a $19 pump from the amsoil dealer. This pump fit perfectly on the large screw on top of the 1 qt. plastic ATF bottle. It didn't completely suck it all out and I ended up dumping the remainders into the last qt. bottle. This made the change go quickly and cleanly without having to disassemble the shifter boot etc. to pour through the top. I have read in other threads about the G-56 transmission not taking all the fluid but I sure didn't experience it. I wish the aftermarket oil coolers sold through Geno's would fit the G-56...

Hey guys, I have a 2500 CTD 4x4 manufactured 4/05 with the G56. Does anybody know if there was a TSB issued on the overfill, or if it is something people just figured out on their own. Also wondering if there is a code or # on the transmission case that might let me know if I should consider doing the overfill or not. TIA

one more question. I am not sure exactly when you are supposed to change the fluid. I could only find 60000 miles in myu owners manual today. Surely they aren't going that long with the t-case and g56.

Jungledave,

Theoretically, you can not wear out the lubricity of oil. You can only contaminate (blow-by gasses, un-burnt or leaking fuel, water for condensation (hot cold hot cold) intake dust getting by the air filter and onto the cylinder walls etc) it thus requiring the changing of the oil (like in our engines). Manual transmissions, transfer cases and differentials are sealed and don't get contaminated. Therefore, one would deduce that there would be an indefinite time on using the oil - hence the 60K change time in your owners manual.

The aforementioned units can however get some contamination from the medal particles of gear wear. The G56 transmission drain plug has a magnet attached to the bottom drain plug that should hold any medal particles that come into contact with it.

With all that said, many of us like the secure feeling of changing the oil. It makes us feel good - I am one of them just to get Amsoil in - but honestly I can't justify it.

"I WISH THE AFTERMARKET OIL COOLERS SOLD IN GENOS WOULD FIT MY G-56. "

MMerlino----I have fastcoolers on my '06 G-56, so they do fit an 06 if you want them.

I just replaced the t-case and the G56 mine two weeks ago. I can't remember how much the t-case took but the G56 took a little over 6qt of Amsoil ATF+4 on level ground. Like MMerlino I used an Amsoil hand pump and it worked great. I used it too to fill both diff.

The Fastcoolers from Geno's will not fit as stated on their catalog. However, you can go to Fastcoolers www.fastcoolers.com and they can sell you one for the G56 for an extra $20.

What Wrench

Can anyone tell me what the name/kind of wrench it takes to remove the plug on the G56? Also where to buy one?? I wanted to check my fluid but didn't know where or how to??

Thx,JB

I'll probably do some checking and stick with amsoil I think. I think in my 01 Iit was recommended to put 30 weight in the transmission. The atf sounds a little thin but will keep reading and learning!

Why wouldn't you go with Amsoil again. I am thinking about putting some in mine
The transmission shifts incrementally better now with the Amsoil, but I don't know if its worth the substantial price cost. It doesn't say ATF+4 on the label either but Amsoil claims it surpasses Dodge's requirements. You'll have to make up your own mind on this.
