i own an 03 with the 5600, like it alot, what are the gear ratios in the G56, did i mess up ordering this 06 last week, are my rpm's at 70 going to change, or is the overdrive still the same?... ... need to know in case i ought to cancel and try to get an auto!!!!, thanks

I was going to write something about this. About four weeks ago I went to order an 06. Had the paperwork almost done. I seen the L on the shifter when I drove it. I asked to see the gear ratios of the new trans. The NV5600 has a . 73 OD. The G56 (getrag) has a . 79 OD, a loss of 6% OD. The NV5600 @ 70 MPH w/ 373 = 1788 RPMs. The G56 @ 70 MPH w/ 373 = 1935 RPMs. This could cost MPG. The first gear is now a granny gear. The trans is a 5 speed w/ a granny. I haul heavy loads there won't be much use for that gear on the asphalt. The NV5600 from first on up was nice and consistant for getting a 20K load going. Guys I know that are hauling veary heavy loads with the G56, were they would normaly grab first gear even if they didn't stop are skipping that gear because they said it's to low, and they can feal how hard it is pulling in second. Granny trans weren't liked much in the past. I was told by a reliable source the change was made because the trans was quite a bit cheaper. You would think with the new trucks having all of this power and bigger gears (loss of 354) you would not have to give up any over drive to pull a load, I would like to see more over drive. I canceled the truck. I made a deal this week on a new 05 with an NV5600 1000 miles away, can't wait! In my opinon I find this trans to be disapointing.

It is not a Getrag unit.

Actually L is useful in getting a very heavy load moving up a hill on asphault.

They need a taller gear ratio and AAM is working to release something in the 3. 42 range.

The G56 with 3. 73 is the same final drive ration as the NV5600 with 4. 11.

Glad you found a truck that you like.

using Klengers sheet I found the following.

My old 98, 3:54, 245/75-16 nv4500 - 68mph=2000rpm

My current 2002, 4:10, 235/80-16 47re - 65mph=2000rpm

My next 2006, 3:73, 265/70-17 G56 - 64mph=2000rpm.

The 3:42 with 265/70-17 g56 - 70mph @ 2000rpm.

Yes the 3:42 does seem like the best choice, but its to late for me this time!
