I'm new to the TDR. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
'06 5.9 Mega SRW, 4x4, G56 with 132k mi. I've owned the truck about three years. It has always had a transmission "growl" in 1st or 2nd rolling at idle or at the start of acceleration. I have read a few things, including some older articles from TDR magazine. It seems the general opinion is that the flexy G56 has a 100k mi life and should be rebuilt before catastrophic failure.
Does the growling indicate transmission wear or potential failure? If/when rebuilding, are there higher quality parts out there to fix this transmissions design flaws?
Thanks

It must of had the SMF conversion if it has a growl. The negative about the G56, is when you convert to a SMF from a DMF they are noisy. They also run hot, and a temperature gauge should be installed. My G56 was nice and quiet, and the stock clutch was slipping, due to a glitch developed from an ECM update. I had it inspected by Standard Transmission before the SMF conversion due to the noise factor and they found browned bearings and were replaced. But immediately after, it growled and remains that way. If your interested, you can read about my cooler system I installed that keeps my trans under 180*, otherwise I saw routinely over 230* with the highest of 250* under light towing conditions. Has the noise gotten worse since it was purchased? If not, just take the proper precautions, or convert it to a NV5600 as I plan on when my G56 fails. Also what oil are you using?

Thanks for the advice. At tear down i'll find out flywheel type. Since I've owned it, noise has not worsened. I'm running Royal Purple Syncromax. For now, seems like another quart is needed.
As far as PTO coolers, a few versions are out there. What has worked best?

Open link, it is what I did and recommend. The secret to the G56 is to keep it cool, I believe that the reason they stretch is they can run extremely hot, softening up the Aluminum. With your 3rd Gen Radiator, it has the tabs and clips molded into the radiator to bolt the auto trans cooler to it, Dodge used the same radiator for both the auto and manual transmission equiped CTD trucks. So I used an OEM Transcooler as you see in the pictures and installed a pump. This is expensive, but all of the investigative work has been done and I posted the cooling data it's capable of.
