I have an '07 DRW 3500 5. 9 2wd with the G56. Truck is totally stock with 490,000 miles on the transmission. It is now starting to make noises in 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear when accelerating. I suppose I will be replacing it soon. My question is what to do? Low mileage used, have someone rebuild mine, buy a Dodge factory reman or an ATS unit? My buddy who has the same transmission had Standard do his and had 2 failures in very low miles (1500 and 20,000). He then got another rebuilt unit from another rebuilder and it is going down at about 25,000 miles. His truck was used with 90,000 miles when he purchased it and the transmission he took out at 560,000 miles was a Dodge Mopar reman. Anyone have any suggestions? We make a living with these trucks and want it right, so not concerned with being a cheapskate. Oh, I have ran the factory DMF and Mopar clutches the entire time, getting 250,000 miles per with no problems. I'm thinking Dodge or ATS. You guys steer me in the right direction.

Thats some serious milage, good job! They sometimes get a bad rap that I am not sure they deserve. Give us some work/mainatance history, please. Oil type too.

Sorry, I can't help on a rebuilder, I do all my own repairs.

You might consider buying a NEW G56 from Dodge. Unless your '07, 5. 9 was built in the last two weeks of '06, you will have the . 79 ratio for your 6th gear. The new G56 trans for the 6. 7 has the . 74 ratio 6th. It equates to about 4-5 mph faster at the same rpm in 6th gear. I have driven both transmissions. The . 79 you are going 60mph at 2000rpm and the later . 74, you are going 65mph at 2000rpm. From what I have seen, the trans NEW from Dodge is about $6300 WOW!!

Just a thought, you get all NEW and not someones questionable rebuild.

Are they new Motorhead? A local transmission guy here told me they were remans. That's a good price for a new one. 490,000 miles,Dang!

Dave, I looked up after and it is $6300! for a 2wd and 5400 for the 4wd. I checked Mopar parts online and it doesn't dhow as a re-man but they also wanted a $600 core so..... ????? I am keeping my eyes open for a low mileage used '07. 5 and later as a spare for my truck.

Chris, yeah, they're out there. When these G-56 trucks first appeared, guys who had bought their trucks from the insurance companies were offing them at a very reasonable price. I just hit 51K so it's going to be awhile.

Based on my conversations with Standard transmissions, they do not replace the synchros when rebuilding. Synchros are a Chrysler only part and very expensive. Over $2,000. 00 for the set is what I've seen.
