Engine "loping"?

MY 07 3500 DRW is hard to shift into 5th... ... . Only 1400 miles... ... . Should I give it more time/miles before i take it in..... trucksalesdave... ... ... central Georgia

Mine has always been notchy going into 5th as well. I've been needing to take mine in, but haven't had the chance yet. Does your transmission also "pop" out of gear violently when in reverse backing down a hill? Mine does this as well. There is a TSB that addresses the reverse problem, and references the 5th gear synchros as well... I wonder if there's a correlation there. --Eric

I have a new 06 with the G56 in it, 1300 miles. When it was BRAND NEW... . it was a bit notchy going into first only. I changed out the gear lube on it to fresh ATF+4 and it was instantly SMOOTH AS GLASS in all gears! I actually changed out ALL the fluids on it since it sat on the lot for a while. . If you haven't changed the fluid out yet, try that and see if you have a noticeable difference. Hope that helps...

Mine is an '05 with about 32k miles on it with about 20k or more with a dual disk clutch. No problems or complaints so far I'd give it some time.

roperteacher, what brand of gear lube do you use? Is it Amsoil? I've been thinking of changing the oil in my '06 G56 since it is still a little notchy - 10000 miles.

Thanks,
John

Hey there, I actually went to my local Masterlube. . now wait before you freak out. . LOLOLOL THese guys are excellent and I have been working with the same guy since 98 in there. I just tried to call but they were closed. If memory serves me, it was Chevron or Penzoil ATF+4 100% synthetic 6 quarts. I looked at the spec sheets and it met all of the requirements for Chrysler...

Oh, also wanted to add that I normally change all of my own fluids but the new G-56 is harder for me to get under when it's just parked. I have the 4x2. With Nurf Bars. . I just don't feel comfortable like I did on my NV5600. THese guys let me go completely under the truck with them in the pit etc. . kind of cool. Wish I had the pit when I changed out my Rear differential today!!!

If you intend to take it to the dealer, I would suggest you not change the fluid with such low miles on it. That might give the dealer a possible "out" to say you put the wrong fluid in.

Very true, wonder how they would know you changed it out unless you put the absolute wrong fluid in there that was a complete different color or something??? If it meets the specs then the dealer has to prove that the fluid you used caused the problem. I actually talked to my service writer today about me installing a PML cover on my diff and he said that he has no problems with it and in fact they Sell all Mag Hytec products... ?? Weird eh!

My g56 has a similar problem, well it is really not a problem on mine just the way it is designed. It feels like there is a spring that tries to force it in neutral or push it to neutral when going up or down into fifth or sixth. I have gotten use to it and simply put a little more outward or right pressure when going into fifth or sixth. Mine has 10k on it and still feels the same and I am sure in my case it is normal and I don't have any problem since the g56 has programmed me to use it propperly. My g56 also feels the same in first and second but it is a little easier from a leverage standpoint to keep the shifter tight towards you when using first and second. I am not saying there is nothing wrong with yours but I work with a couple of guys besides me who have commented about how different the shift feel of the g56 compares to other 6 speeds.

I believe that the G56 is made in Brazil and maybe a couple of other places. It is an in-house Benz transmissing that is used in the Benz midium duty trucks.

n7gxz ... i am under the same impression ...

do you have a reference i could print out?

everyone i've spoke to has incorrectly told me it's a getrag, and i would like to have a printable source to just take out and show them

Try a search on G56. The sourcing of this transmission has been covered on many threads here and on DTR. It's manufactured in Brazil by a DC company that's a JV of DaimlerChrysler and Eaton, but it's basically an in-house DC transmission.

Tried pulling a 7k lb 5er with it and it killed the clutch within about 2500mi! Only about 12k on the stock 05 truck and it sits dead in the drive. What replacement clutches are people going with?

Southbend Clutch.

Call Peter@Southbend Clutch. He's got a lot of options depending on your needs. I personally love this clutch/transmission combo and intend to keep my truck stock and not exceed the limits of the engineering parameters. Overloading or excessively large tires will kill it.

Check you back issues of theTDR they mentioned where the G56 came from. AS I recall it was a Benz or one of its companies.
