Gale Banks in June 4wheel & Offroad

I know Gale Banks is a successful guy. Makes alot of money. Yada, yada... And we all know of his penchant for "non-smoking" products that make some power, but nothing to write home about. But he might just be onto something here. Some of his quotes are, "The 2007-year diesels have a new suite of emissions solutions that complicate the aftermarket enhancement of these powertrains. No longer will the 'smoke boys' be able to sell their gross poluting products. It's going to take some smarts to design products that do not violate these emissions systems yet improve performance. Of course the 'smoke boys' will try, and may even cheat. Only those with technical and engineering knowledge will survive. Old school hacking and overfueling was stupid in the past and idiotic in the future"...

If he's right about this, and I have a feeling he is as I don't think we can roll the coal and not screw up all these emission systems. We better hang onto our 5. 9's like they are gold... . because they are... :-laf

Sounds like once again GB is jealous of company's that really know how to make power.

Banks lost me in the early days of the first third gens when he was having trouble developing an electronic power adder for us and came out instead with some eng hardware and then referred to company's that were talented enough get their products to the market as "hackers".

Of course all that kind of talk came to an end when they finally got the Six Gun to work.

thats right Banks is at it again. It will cost 3 times as must as he calls a hacker to program our trucks. I would rather have a stock truck than go with banks again. I have had banks stuff on a truck of mine It was a ford psd I got the power pack. Then I put a 80hp chip in my older psd and it handed the banks powerpack it but. And guess what that hacker that smoked i had more power smoke better egt's and more mpg? Now who is the hacker now

Those comments by Banks are kind of funny as they "ALWAYS" refer to their "Fastest diesel pick-up" the legendary "sidewinder" when discussing how great their company is, I wonder how emmissions complient that truck is??

The bottom line is Banks makes products that work, but they don't work any better (and in most cases not as well as) than most of their lower priced competitors. Banks will never appeal to the true afficianado of diesel pick-ups. When was the last winner of a diesel drag truck or pulling truck running Banks gear?? Banks appeals to people who fall for the claim that their product wont void their warranty, glitzy ads, and bogus claims of "highest proven horsepower". I know, I went for the six gun, of course this was before the fine folks on TDR showed me the light! Banks will continue to make money, and may even come out with some good products, but I will definately not be putting money in Gail's pockets, I already gave him too many of my hard earned dollars.

The real trick is going to be coming up with a plug in emissions fooler w/o going to jail. Once the particle traps and cats are gone and a plug fooling the sensors, the power will go up and go up quickly. Don't know if that'll ever happen though... EPA might put the clamps down.

Maybe "off-road use only" will be the loophole. ;)

I have never been a Banks fan but after I got my Motor Home with a 8. 3 Cummins they were the only manufacturer that built anything for this motor and there are almost as many 8. 3's out there as 5. 9's. The kit I have adds about 100 hp and has increased my mileage by 2 mpg.

Good point, and if they are the only and/or the best at adding power to the 6. 7L then more power to 'em getting market share. As to emmissions requirements, aren't all of us running aftermarket power on our 5. 9's technically in violation?? There really aren't that many dedicated pulling and dragging trucks out there that would qualify as "off road only". Will it be any more illegal to remove emmissions eqipment on the 6. 7 than it currenly is to remove the CAT on a 5. 9?

No, but I wonder if the enforcement will be stepped up.

That really is the question, I know in Mich we had mandatory testing in 3 counties in s. e. Mich during the late 80's and early 90'. They gave it up when test results showed no change in air quality, the public was p. o'ed and it was obvious that 50 bucks would guarantee a passed test. Would we see the same thing with new diesel emmission testing?? Or would they find new and creative ways to catch "cheaters"?

I am guessing that the only cost effective way to insure that the end user does not modify the vehicle would be to ban the sale of items which might lead one to disable emmissions equipment, namely tuners and downloaders. Though I imagine it could be extended to items like injector nozzles also, especially if the marine, heavy equipment, and generators are subject to the same emmission standards as on road vehicles.

Alright I gotta go now I am scaring the hell out of myself.
