Just did my 3rd oil change today at 21k miles. First at 2.5k, 2nd at 11k.. No issues with either. Using 3gal shell 15-40 and fleetguard stratapores..

No leakage from the engine that I can see, and no smoke seen from pipe..

poured out 1.5gal, still had a full filter tho, so lost about a gallon.. Any ideas? Fresh oil showing mid-dipstick

gotta admit im a bit guilty not checking the oil level prior, but a new truck shouldnt use oil. No idiot lights went off, oil pressure was good prior to change. 50psi

1 Gal lost in 10K miles? Honda says a qt in a 1000 miles is normal you using around 1 qt every 2500 ...... I don't feel that is bad..... My 2013 will use around 1 -2 qt every 3000 miles....

Every engine is different. After an oil change, when I add 3 gallons, my oil level is just a little above full on the dipstick after sitting all night on a verified level surface. 6 months later, its still in the same spot just a lot darker. When I drain it, I only seem to get back about 2.5 gallons. I allow 24 hours of drain time. Still only about 2.5 gallons back into the jugs for disposal.

Haven;t hit the change point on my 2015 yet, so this info may not be relevant...BUT

On my 2003 5.9, an oil change with a pre-filled filter was consistently 14 quarts to hit the "full" mark on the dipstick. This is over the course of 275,000 miles, and the truck never burned any oil (consistently full at oil change time, checked every time before draining).

So yes, I would say the capacities are approximate.

When did you take delivery of your '15 ???
The owner's manual / diesel supplement states that oil change intervals are not to exceed 15k miles OR 6 months OR 500 engine hours......whichever occurs first.

Picked it up March of this year. I've got 14K miles on it, and just a bit over 400 hours. Granted I'm slightly over the 6-month interval, but I consider a time interval somewhat arbitrary, although I wouldn't want to leave it in there for 2 years.

It'll probably get a change this coming weekend, assuming the filters and other goodies I ordered make it in before then...

that's spooky!!! mine take 3 gal. i drain out 3 gal. granted i change at 7500-8500 miles... i only let mine drain as long as it takes me to get to and change the oil filter. then i flip the switch on my drain plug, and dump 3 gallons in.
i'd freak if only 1.5 gal drained... maybe it's not broke in well yet....

Did you perform the actual previous oil changes.....or was it done by someone at a shop???

Yea i do all my own changes.

I do typically get about 2.5gal back, after draining the filter for awhile, so maybe this isnt such a huge deal..

Truck did sit overnight in the same place, then I drained oil without starting or moving truck.

Running fine for a 500mi trip today, checked oil before and after, was at mid-stick..

I would just watch it for a few thousand miles. Most Cummins engine do not use much if any oil between changes.

In my 20 1/2 years of my ownership, mine does not use any oil, @ 163,000, miles. It did use some when I started to use Valvoline. Called them and they advised to give it a couple change intervals and it would quit using oil. They were right, it did.
I think the right thing to do with a new engine is keep an eye on all fluids especially the motor oil, and the new ones with DEF, don't figure that every thing is going to be just peachy, cause you might end up with no warranty because of laziness on your part. I'm not saying that you are lazy, just a bit of non-responsible for the possible out come.

I changed mine today at 24K miles and it had lost about about 3 quarts since the prior change 9K miles ago. The first two changes it lost almost none. Same oil each time. I found it odd. My bell housing is slightly wet but certainly not enough to account for so much oil. I guess after 11 years of oil changes on my old 2003 and the first two oil changes on my 2015, none requiring more than a quart maximum between oil changes, I have become complacent about checking my oil between changes.

So............if I understand this right.......you performed the oil change on a cold engine???

How much oil did you add after the oil change???

More than once I've returned home from a road trip, due for an oil change. I've left the truck running, ran through the door, kissed the wife & daughter, changed clothes, gather up drain pan & tools, shut off truck, then have the drain plug out within 45 seconds or less.

I'm a glutton for punishment I guess......I love scalding, 205*F oil draining from my oil pan. #ad

Every time, consistently, I have this level:

Yea i always let it sit for a few hours to cool before a change, sometimes cold.. 10k miles on the oil, it aint runnin slow. How the hell do you change a hot oil filter? seriously

I filled the filter with a little under a half gallon (max), and then added the rest of the 3gal, as I've done since for the past 4 trucks since 1996

I have done a lot of towing on this current change. I added 1 qt at around the 10K mark on the oil. Level is still near full at 14K. This change is from 15-30K on the clock. I will be doing a Blackstone sample with TBN. Next week will be 6 mo.

Read my EAZY 2013 and up oil change thread.
