Wow what a guy - Frank Feldman

Global Warming Debacle Debunked Again.

I need help in choosing a game camera. I would like one that can resolve (clarity) a license plate, especially at night. Is very concealable, and quiet in operation. I have a two legged thief to catch.

I used a DVR/radio camera. I gives you a good video, the right one qualifies to the standard of evidence, and tells a better story than a single shot. It was a little pricier than a game camera, but he never saw it & the world is now a better place.

I have zero experience with DVR/Radio cameras, but I will check out an electronics store. The camera unit must have its own power source. The radio signal would have to travel at least 100 feet. I like "but he never saw it & the world is now a better place". Surely someone has used a game trail camera for this purpose.

I've used several trail cams, and the best so far is the cuddeback IR. I think it could be used for survailence. It doesn't flash like a regular camera, but there is a small red flash. You would have to be pretty close to see it. Just make sure it doesn't dissapear, b/c there about $250.

Check out the sports mans guide. While on our last vacation I set the camera on top of a grand father clock pointing at the kitchen. We had arranged with family members to stop in and feed the pets. I caught my son going through our refrigerator. We all had a good laugh.
A complete search list.

DO NOT buy a camera with a flash. The IR units are the way to go. Set it up to shoot around 4-6 photos in a sequence. Animals (dogs) will cause unwanted memory use. Practice with it and do not tell anyone about it.
Hope you catch um. What are they snatching?

Thank you gentlemen for the information. Bushnell has a trophy game camera I am eying up. It is passive IR, has a wide field of view and I have not found any negative comments about it. The mega pixel is selectable 3, 5 and 8. It will hold a 16 GB memory card.

There are thieves and vandals. The vandal drives by and shoots windows out of my trucks and cars. He has a 22 cal rifle. He just stays at the outer limits of range of the house cameras. I have video of him driving by and shooting, but the RCMP are useless until given a photo of the plate. His face is not quite clear enough for ID and I know the truck make and colour, but need a plate.

The thieves are attracted to my Dodges, cars and trucks. A "NO TRESPASSING" sign used to be enough. The driveway has a lockable gate. They park in the driveway before the gate. The area I need to cover is about 30 X 30 feet.

I had something similar that I used a wireless IR camera transmitting to a receiver hooked up to the DVR. The wireless camera was a loaner from a friend, and was effectively crap. I was eating 9V batteries every 6 hours. I finally had to snake an extension cord out 120' for constant power. That's how I got a positive ID on the guy. Now that I have a good system, If I had to deal with it again, I'd invest in a better transmitter/receiver unit that uses any camera. I have four good cameras already. Positioning camera's is the key (that, & they need to be good cameras).

The reason the DVR is so slick is that the software they use nowadays makes finding events recorded on the drive easy, and you can manage the memory well, and it networks into a PC. All this stuff is little pricey, but the right equipment will catch the guy in short order. If you're planning to use it to prosecute someone, there's a legal standard that needs to be incorporated into the equipment so the encrypted video can't be photo-shopped. A good lawyer would argue that point. The cheap stuff at Costco or Home Depot is ok for catching a babysitter or something, but anything outdoors will require a little investment.

A decent game camera might be a better choice if it gets the job done. It just depends on how many triggering events you have to sort through. It wouldn't have worked for me. My guy was too random, and there was too much non-target traffic I had to sort through to catch him.

Come to think of it we need a wireless dvd type, recordable, 3000 foot range video camera for work. We have 120 volts at both locations. Willing to install an exterior antenna. We have an extra slave computer.
Any ideas?

Thank you sarj. I have to digest that info. I did pick up a Bushnell Trophy but the passive ir is noticeable to me. I have only played with it for an hour tonight. I saw the pir at work and if I can see it, then the camera will be smashed or stolen. There is a company Uway that makes a "black flash" that is isais to be invisible to the human eye. If there is a way to adapt it to the Bushnell so that the pir is no longer needed, I will buy one.

Still thinking about adding a higher end camera into the house system. The recorder box is a hard disk drive. Location and distance are against me. I thank you all again.

For the money, samsung was the best bang for the buck because the DVR unit was expandable. Lots of software filters to screen out unwanted event triggers. I didn't need remote control cameras, but mine have a wide range of presets & zooms.

I have an SVR-960 recorder, two SOC-4160 cameras & two SVR-960 cameras. This stuff is about a year old. The good transmitter & receiver was going to run me $400 as a used demo-product from a local samsung rep, & was reportedly good for the 1. 5-2 mile range. The next step up was in the 15 mile range which would be good for remote yards tied to a network. I heard the mile & a half unit ran quite a bit more new, but I passed on it since my problem ceased to be a problem. I kind of wish I went ahead and got it, and I'd be getting custom surf checks in the morning at my desk instead of driving down to look at it. I'm getting old & lazy I guess.

And they probably wouldn't be as picky if you started shooting back. On the other hand, one well placed shot on they guy's car and he may decided to never come back. I'll guess that the guy who is pointing a rifle at your house would be less likely to report you pointing one at him, for if he did, he puts himself at the scene of the crime.

I do not agree about shooting back unless he is on your property or in your house... then that is a different story. The way these liberal judges are today... they would throw YOU in jail and let the perp go! No, I think you are better off trying to get a picture of this perp and doing it legally. Good luck to you sir.

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on that. You can't afford to wait to become a victim with someone who's stupid enough to lob 22's into your truck window. My experience has been that a threat/challenge unanswered can just as easily lead to an escalation of antagonism.

The proper response is to convey the concept of "consequences of your actions". Now mind you, you don't need to shoot someone to get their attention... I didn't need to, but I viewed my problem as a potential threat to my woman, and what was conveyed is what happens at the "next level". An over-reaction is most effective for this, but it needs to be a controlled over-reaction. Trust me... it works.

Regardless of your tact, it should be planned and executed with care & purpose, and most of all, discretion.

When you put it like that sarj I can understand where you are coming from and I agree with you. I guess it would depend on the cicumstances and the level of threat danger being presented. My advise was directed towards the initial posting situation. A direct threat to my family, woman, children would trigger a response from me for sure. "No hesitation-no remorse... and my favorite... Ya snooze... Ya looze" are a couple of sayings I remember from tours overseas in SE asia back in my day. Nuff said. Thanks for the reply.

My original intent with the shooting back comment was-and I guess I failed to show it-a bit tongue in cheek, not to start a war of ideology. Sorry I took us off topic. Though I would like to react like that if it were happening to me, I'm sure I'd be the one getting put away for a long time. Anyway, I had heard of this camera system recently on the radio, but hadn't researched it much until this thread reminded me of it. It's a bit pricey, but has some unique features. Wether or not you go for it, at least it's worth a look.
