I have a Garmin 478 which is the marine version. It is great on the highway and the only time I've had a problem where it told me to go the wrong direction was when I downloaded new maps and the download was corrupted.



There was some kind of problem with the USB port timing out during the long download and I didn't know there was a problem till I took a trip. There were large areas that were pretty much blank when I went through South Carolina and the GPS started giving me incorrect heading information.



I called Garmin and they told me to reload the maps. I did, it worked and I've had no more problems. By the way, with Garmin, you can buy the maps for life and upgrade anytime you like. The agreement says four times a year but I haven't seen a limit. I check about every two months and if the updates are available, I download them.

Bought a Nuvi 350 many years ago, and got the lifetime map upgrades. Generally pretty good, but not perfect. There is a setting to choose between the fastest and shortest route, so you may get goofy directions depending on what you choose. I also bought the City Maps data card for Italy and used it there. Worked very well, and Italian is one of the included languages.



Unfortunately, the unit itself is experiencing battery failure. Cost of sending it to Garmin for service is about $2 less than a new one. And the lifetime maps does not transfer between units. So we use it as a back up now.



Because the old unit was dying, we bought a Nuvi 1490. So far it's been great, I really like the visual lanes in the display which helps to know where to be when an exit comes up. If you keep up on the downloads, it really helps as roads change often. Go into the settings and play around a bit, you can customize it to your liking. It will never be perfect, but it sure helps a lot when you're travelling. Around town you know the short cuts and back roads better...

I originally bought the nüvi® 660 and have really enjoyed it. There were some initial problems and Garmin took care of me and then some. I then recently decided to by a nüvi® 1390LMT for the wife. I paid extra for the lifetime maps and traffic. What they don't tell you is that you also get lifetime comercials! Everywhere I go, I get a hotel advertisement. Why get a large screen when it is filled with Krap! Done with Garmin.

Yep, those stupid ads drive me crazy too. You should read the comments on the Garmin user boards, the ads are not well received...

I have a Garmin 750 and have up loaded new maps to it several times with out issue. I like the unit as long as I am not pulling the 5er. My only complaint is when pulling a 5er. The unit will try to send me down roads that may not allow my trailer pass under an overpass. The unit has no ability to set up RV's limits.

I am looking into the new Rand McNally RV friendly RV GPS. May purchase this for the truck and trailer.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 850 series GPS that I use on vacation or other trips but primarily bought it to use in my patrol vehicle (Deputy Sheriff). As stated above, you have to remember and take into account how you have set your preferences when using it. We have had to rescue folks on a couple of occasions that their Garmin has sent them down back roads that are closed in the winter. As it turns out, they had their preferences set to "shortest route". Might not have found them until Spring but they lucked out and got stuck where there was actually cell phone service (that can be spotty at best around South Pass). They didn't know where they were but were able to give dispatch GPS coordinates and I was able to track them down. I did the same thing when on vacation. The shortest route to where we were going took us to a ferry crossing at a river in North Carolina that was closed for the season. Took a bit of back tracking but it was a pretty drive! Just remember to check out your route and know where you want to go... don't trust your life to technology.

I had a problem, Garmin told me how to fix it and it worked.

I started this thread sooo, a report on our trip to Homer, AK. Sue, (named our 3790LMT after a really dumb cow we once had), did real good. Found everything we were looking for. It is set for fastest route and found several by passes around towns & cities. The voice command sure helps a lot while driving. Being able to set it to kilometers/Hr sure helps in Canada. Watching the elevation was neat in the mountains.

The only thing that bugged me was changing to different cities. The Cities feature won't let you select a city very far your current location and keeps resetting itself back to the first town as the milage changes while we were driving. The voice command won't let you select a town out of the state or province you are in. Have to wait to x the border or manually enter something. Not easily done while driving. On a 9,300 mile trip who wants to stop to play with a GPS?

My first impression with Sue was YUCK. Now I am pretty impressed. Amazing how fast that GPS could learn. It still wants me to take a "wrong" route through San Antonio. Some day I will follow it to see how "wrong" it is.
