I just received a Garmin eTrex Legend CX for Christmas - :)

Question:

I'd like to incorporate it w/ my laptop and a navigation program that is helpful for navigating the urban jungle for work.

Will Microsoft's Streets & Trips (regular $35. 00 version, without the gps sensor) work by plugging in a usb cable between the laptop and the eTrex?

If this doable - what programs are best?

Microsoft? Delorme? ???

I have the older model Legend that uses the serial cable. I use it with both Street and Trips and Street Atlas. All you need to do is to define your gps imput stream and start GPS. Works like a champ. I use my Panasonic Toughbook mounted on a RAM-Mount made for the 06 Dodge.

I learned the hard way to disable non-paved roads or you will end up following the directions up and over some 4 wheel drive trails. Have fun, its great on trips.

The Etrex legend cx has a really good interface built right in and if you get to know it you really don't need the laptop at all. I have one that I use in my truck, on my street bike, and on my dirt bike. I bought a 1 gb mini sd card for it and usually have pretty much everything east of the mississippi plus eastern canada loaded in there (detailed maps and data from the city navigator north america), topographic maps for the entire state of michigan, plus trail maps for the entire state of mi. You put in a destination and it will automatically change the map scale for you to see the next place you need to turn. Has great data for gas stops, food, etc. I bought a mount for mine that I glued to the underside of the top of the dash and it sits right in front of my hvac controls just to the right of the steering column. Works great there and plenty readable.

Steve,

What mount did you end up getting?

Any pics available of your mount?

BTW

I went ahead and bought the Street Navigator software to get maximum use between the handheld and laptop.
