Why no cab & chassis?

My wife and I were traveling from Vicksburg MS to Houston a few days ago and stopped in Bossier City LA at the new Bass Pro Shop "just to look around". We all know how expensive that can get... ... We found (and subsequently bought) a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 that normally lists for $999. It was on sale for $799, and had a rebate coupon for another $100 Oo. I don't know if this is a nationwide offer, but it may be worth checking out in other parts of the country. The sales clerk thought they were phasing out the 2610 for the 2650. Anyway, I thought it was a good deal. So far, we are really impressed with the unit. By the way , the rebate offer ends January 15, 2005, so if you go shopping, don't procrastinate too long.

The 2620 will likely supercede the 2610. The 2650 is the 2620 with added bells and whistles for permanent installation in a particular vehicle.

I'm very pleased with my 2620, although I'd be even more pleased had the $100 rebate (which also applies to the 2620) been available when I bought mine!

Steve, wish I'd known you was interested in a 2610, you could have bought one from the Dist. in Hays when you were here, 650. 00 for a refurb. with 100. 00 rebate and new warranty. The guy in Hays is one of the biggest Garmin Dist. /dlr. in the US. You can convert the 2610 to a 2620 by pruchasing a micro processor drive that installs where the memory card goes, it has the maps for all of the USA and part of Ca. in it. I have it and it works great. I think it was 200. 00.

Did ya get the Prodigy installed?

Larry

Hi Larry... good to hear from you again. When I was in Hays, I wasn't in the market for any GPS. In fact, when we went into Bass Pro Shop, we still weren't in the market, it was just one of those thngs that was too good to pass up. The Prodigy is still in my suitcase. We are still in Houston. Don't know when we will get back to Phoenix. I just hope the Dodge is still where we parked it !!!! Will definately drop you a line and let you know how it works when I get it installed. We are looking for a new contract now, so we should be back in travel mode soon. It was good meeting you. Drive carefully.

does the 2610 have the 2. 2 gig hard drive or just the 2620? the 60cs I have is great for my dirt bike because of it's size but loading / unloading maps is a pita. I may get street pilot for the truck.

We just bought a 2620 for ourselves for a late Christmas from Costco with the rebate.

RustyJC, I see what you mean about it... great little machine! :D

Rusty, can you explain the diff. ? When the 2620 came out, I asked the guy I bought my 2610 from if he would trade mine in, he said why, yours will do everything the 20 will do and more. Something about taking updates.

Larry

The micro hard disc in the 2620 comes with all of North America mapped onto it. You can travel from one coast of the U. S. to the other without ever having to load additional maps, etc. My understanding is that the memory chip of the 2610 won't hold this much map data; therefore, loading of specific maps for the area in which you'll be traveling is required.

I found out today mine has a micropressor hard drive installed where the memory card goes, so it is the same as a 2620. You can convert a 2610 to the same as a 2620 for about $200. 00. My Garmin dlr. did this for me. It works, cause I have used it coast to coast, and Ca. to Mexico, and have never had to load any maps from my PC.

2610 is a great value ....

2610 is everything the 2620 or 2650 is less the extra builit in storage. Here is what Garmin says about storage on the 2610... . " Using a compatible 2 GB CF card, you may download the entire volume of North American City Navigator (1050 maps at almost 1. 5 GB). The StreetPilot 2610/2650 is compatible with the IBM/Hitachi microdrive 1 GB card. However, the StreetPilot 2610/2650 is not compatible with MagicStore microdrives or the Hitachi 2 GB and 4 GB microdrives. " The other thing we like about loading maps is we load the older 4. 0 Metroguide as it has better gravel road/trail coverage for the upper midwest. We have both "layers" loaded and switch back and forth depending what we need to do or where you need to go. Local roads display much quicker (not zoomed in as much) then the newer Navigator series.

We run several 2610's for instate routing as well as longer out-of-state trips. We can fit the entire midwest, several western states, and east central states on a 512 card. You can a 512 CF card for under $40.

If you have never had true autorouting navigation, you don't know what your missing. "Ms Garmin" had never got us lost yet. We threw out all the paper maps from our trucks!
