6860 Miller timing kit question

Why does my gauge read empty and it only takes 24 (35 tank) gallons to fill it. I'm getting 17 mpg every tank. This is a constant reading for every tank. Bad sender? Gauge? Suggestions?

My guess would be the sending unit, I've had several go bad on every truck that I've owned.

It's a well known fact the sending units are faulty. I'm going in for my third one tomorrow. Last one was installed about a month ago. DC needs to get their sh** together and produce a sending unit that works.

It could be worse and it mite get worse.
Right now your pretty close I've seen mine read empty when I fill it up. Actually I have been using my trip odometer to know when to fuel up. This was my second, I had first repalced under warranty. So if your under warranty let Dodge do it.
When it cuts to much into their profit maybe they will find the cure.

Some questions: does it read OK when you fill it? Is it always reading "E" or does it move?

If you do a search on this, you can find a "fix" that some have done. Doesnt seem to be too hard if you can get it out.

NORMALLY, at 1/8 you will have a "reserve" amount of about 5-8 gals that wont show even when on "E". This means that @ E you fill about 25-30 gals, that extra amount is not counted by the computer nor guage. This seems to be the "normal" readings for the guage (when working) and we guess that its to "assist" you in not running it dry. If you remove the guage, there is a "bucket" that the pickup sets in and I guess this could hold about 3-4 gals which the float wont read. The floats are known to be off and if they are adjusted to read closer, will increase the possibly of running dry. If that happens, other problems could develop that will be more expensive (Inj pump could go south due to lack of cooling 98. 5 +) lift pump could burn itself out (running constantly to build pressure that it cant) but this one is not too likely. So, what I am trying to say is that you could be OK and have no problem or ??? Another thought is to not fill the tank to the top. Accept the "shutoff" point and the guage seems to last for those who do this.

Had a collection of 3 - 61's & a 69 while I was in Hawaii (beamers). The 69 was like the Barracuda and I still believe that Roots/Mopar "tested" the design on the Mother Country before they put it in production here. That 69 could keep up with a friends Duster at the track, both were stock.

Any chance that the infamous "red nipple"is still on the fuel tank vent and has sucked in the tank.
Have read on this list of it happening.
Just a thought

Mine is always on empty. The warning lite will come on and off as it pleases. Every now and then when I get down low on fuel it(the guage) would move up to 1/8 to 1/4 tank for about ten miles then go right back to empty.
The sending unit did about same thing the first time it went out. Slowy went toward empty(covered under warranty). Who knows one day I mite fix it.

Whoa now! From reading notes here on TDR I was under the impression that it was par for the course for these units to show you flat empty with 8 gal or so still in the tank! #ad

Should I go and gripe at the dealer to get a new sending unit???????
