Get it quick

Hello all, newb here. My username is a little ahead of it's time in the fact that I'm "planning" for my crewcab to get a cummins.

Anyway, I live in California and have a 96 Chevy 1 ton with vortec 454. I want to put in a brand new 2003 HO 24 Valve. I have yet to get a straight answer from anyone on the smog legalities of this swap. I've read things ranging from, it doesn't matter diesels don't get smogged to people telling me I have to run a dodge transmission for it to be smog legal...

I have no problems putting all the emissions related components on it such as a cat, egr, etc but I don't want to get this all done and not be legal...

I'm going to run an Allison 5 speed auto behind it out of a 2003 duramax pickup.

So, 2003 HO 24 valve backed by a 2003 Allison 5 speed in a 1996 Gasser. Whatcha think?

Not sure if it helps but Oregon has their DEQ zones which gassers have to pass the smog tests and I was looking at a crewcab to drop a Cummins into so I asked about it and the response was that our DMV could change the registration to show a diesel which is not required to smog if it's over 8500 GVWR.

I never contacted DMV because we ended up with a 92 F350 CC diesel so the registration is correct as far as type of fuel used.

Well as of right now Diesels don't get smogged here and the DMV just switches it to a Diesel like yours does. But, here we have to have the engine swap inspected and there are all kinds of rules for the inspection... Biggest thing I'm worried about right now is the "Vehicle has to use oem transmission that was origionally offered behind replacement engine".

Pick up a used 5 sp, install, get inspected, put whatever the heck transmission you want in it. It will never be inspected again.

Real easy as I have done a 91 Ramcharger and droped a cummins

and had no problems with smog, walked in to the DMV and 10 minutes later my title was changed, 3 weeks later and new pink slip, just wish I could find it again, it seems to be lost in the paperwork shuffle at home.

Take care

Thierry

Never had to have been inspected by any referee, went to the DMV and had them look at the old title, and vin number, looked at the diesel and done, I had a temp title, 3 weeks later and new pink with diesel on it.

I was going to build a crewcab, but I found a 69 Coronet RT and would like to build that first,

I have 2 85 crewcabs that I am selling suitable for converting if anyone is interested email me directly

Thanks

Thierry
