Thanks, TDR Staff

what is "offset" in regards to wheels?

All you truck drivers, how long will this shifter last???

Been working on an old MF tractor, it runs but I need to freshen up the carb. I can get a rebuild kit, but for what is wanted for 3 gaskets and a needle, Call me cheap im not paying what they want.

Is this Gas that is used now-days, use a special gasket material or is the gasket felt or cork still ok? don't think this is going to be used for anything but to pull a hay wagon around at times and mostly just for fun driving. It may sit for prolong periods don't want to have to rebuild the carb every time I go to use it.

Thanks

Try Tractor Parts Inc. they have complete carb kits for about $30-$45, looks like everything but the kitchen sink!

Make your own. Those gaskets should be a form of thin paperboard. Get some, trace out the old on the new, and use a sharp point Xacto knife to make the cuts. For small holes, you can probably use a leather punch of the right size.

If the gaskets aren't broken, you might try painting them. My uncle's ancient Case DC, the head gasket was in poor-ish condition. We cleaned it, gave it a few coats of silver spray paint and installed it. With the head/valves redone, pistons scuffed up, cylinders ball-honed and new rings installed, that engine runs better than it ever did. Sounds great turning 3-4k RPM.

I took a bore scope and pulled the plugs out and took a look inside the cyl. they look good put some oil down the hole and put the plugs back in, fire in the hole, but the carb leaked like a sieve, pulled it apart and its corroded inside from when fuel was in it and left for Lord only know how many years. Floats look good and had no leaks. I have leather punches of all sorts of sizes so that is not the problem, just didn't know if the gasket paper was still good for un-lead gas.

Thanks

I am a tractor parts dealer for a company called HyCapacity. Let me know the model # of your MF and I can quote you a price on a carb kit.

In my area, everyone from tractor dealers, chainsaw dealers, weed wackier dealers recommend come long storage time, take the time to drain the tans and run the unit until the system is dry. 'They' say since they have been adding MTBE and now ethanol, when in long storage, the fuel either drys out and degrades the gaskets and floats or some have found small pits in the metal for the bowls. I'm not metal specialist, but have taken the time to clear out / drain my equipment each fall and have yet to have issues.

And for gasket materials, we were stuck once on my grandfathers farm. We needed a gasket and it was miles to town. Gramps pulled out a piece of leather from an old coat, we cut the gasket with a knife and had the tractor running. If the compression isn't to extremely high, like for cylinder heads on these newer equipment, you can almost use anything for a good seal. The old low compression rotary cylinders on a biplane was nothing but a piece of leather.

I do know of a guy who used a piece of cardboard to fix his water pump gasket on a '56 Chevy util he got home and wanted to make a new one. On the road, he cut the gasket from a box on the side of the road, got oil from his dip stick to coat the gasket, and installed. Getting the clean water to fill the radiator was his main issue.

One recommendation would be to get viton gaskets. They are more durable when it comes to ethanol nd alcohol extended fuels.

Thanks but went down and got a sheet of gasket material and made the 3 that I needed cleaned up the carb parts put it together and it ran just fine. Actually its not quite a MF its a Massey-Harris-Ferguson Pony Tractor. Im still reading about the history of the companies to form one, kind of interesting to me at least.
