My '95 needs a new t-stat. Years back I replaced the Dodge t-stat with the updated Cummins t-stat that reduced the temp gauge needle swings. Anyone use the Gates t-stats Geno's sells? How do they compare to the genuine Cummins t-stat?

1tuffram, haven't use Gates t-stat I'm still have the original but Gates is a good company and Someone is supposed to try and approve items sold at Genos (At least that is what I have read). I don't think you can go wrong going either way.

I just put one in a month ago. It swings temp quite a bit. I had the updated Cummins one in there prior and liked it (when it wasn't old) a lot better. Gates t-stat doesn't have the little bypasses that the cummins one had.

I drill a small bypass hole in all the stats I install in anything anymore, kinda a safety so you don't airlock one and burn it up before you realize you have no water in the motor. :)

so far my favorite is the mr gasket for a big block mopar, the last couple have been mostly swing free and get up to temp way faster then any other i have tried. i installed the rear freeze plug bypass kit when i had the head off a couple months ago and i get a little swing now but before hardly any, the cummins t-stat i got after i bought the truck had the gauge swinging like a windshield wiper and took forever to warm up

Anyone have a part# for the Cummins t-stat that does not cause the temp gauge needle to swing and what the temp rating is? It's been several years since I replaced the Dodge t-stat and can't find the paperwork. I seem to remember the Cummins t-stat was a lower temp rating (160 deg ??) than the factory stock. It would be nice to go back to a higher temp t-stat for more cab heat and better windshield defrosting in the winter.

I replaced my thermostat awhile back with a Cummins stat. I don't remember the part number but the parts man at Cummins had to use the serial number off the engine to find it in his books. I agree with you I think Cummins is 160 deg rating because mind run cooler now, barely get into the normal range.
