Getting ready to order guages

I had the pleasure of spending the day today with Scott (Proram) from Renegade Diesel, who installed gauges in my new truck, and the truck of FParlee (Fred).

Scott was completely professional, and has a terrific new shop he is setting up near Lancaster, PA. It was a beautiful drive out.

We installed DiProcal pyro, boost, and transmission gauges, in my truck, and pryo, boost, and fuel pressure in Fred's. The instructions provided by DiProcal and Geno's were OK, but there were a few snags.

First, even though the instructions say it is optional to reuse the stock A-pillar as a base, you MUST, otherwise the replacement triple-pod pillar will not fit properly. A cutting dremel is required to surgically remove the "oh-s***" handle, then some fancy finagling is involved. I must say, that I would NEVER have been able to handle the wiring of those gauges, instructions or not. Scott spliced 'em right up. Ran into a little snag finding "hot" wires; finally wired 'em right into the fuse box.

Scott drilled and tapped the manifold slow, with lots of grease, and we started truck and let her idle a minute or so. No shavings, no problems. Started to remove the horn to drill for the boost gauge, but then realized we should use the boost bolt, which we did. Only other issue was the fuel pressure banjo fitting location on Fred's truck, but I'll let him chime in on that. We used the governer test port on the passenger side of the transmission for the temp sender.

These gauges look great at night. Let me say this, get the 0-60 gauge, 600 owners.  WOT, on the flats, I hit 30-32, with get this, max EGT of 1250*! Remember, this was just romping on it, not towing. Looks like bigger exhausts are going to be required on the 600 after all.

Again, kudos to Scott for his paticience with my mechanical ignorance.

Scott,

I'd like to see your setup sometime. I have my gauges (from my old truck) but haven't decided if and when I'll install them. It's always good to go by others experiences. Got any pictures?

Mike

I just installed the di pricol egt guage in a srt-10 a-pillar. Both the gauge and pillar look like they came from the factory. I was way surprised what reading I got. My '03 HO 6-speed drw is bone stock except for a magnaflow 4" exhaust with no muffler. Getting on it completely empty I was able to hit 1250. I couldn't get it to go over that but I couldn't beleive it would hit that temp stock and empty. I am interested to see what it does towing.

This surprised us as well. Both Fred and I were able to achieve that number, just "playing" , not towing anything. He and I are set up identically, except he has 3:73s to my 4:10s.

Credit card, get ready, because I think an exhaust is a-comin'!:D

Mike, my setup looks pretty uch like the picture above. Believe it or not, I am one of the last two or three people on Earth who does not yet own a digital camera. :{

A pretty good match to the factory gauges. I think they're the best looking ones out there - very well made and smooth too. I like them much better than the Autometers I had in my Ford.

Glad we have gauges now!

As Scott (swexlin) stated, We had a great day out at Renegade Diesel with the OTHER Scott (Proram) installing our gauge packages. We installed boost, pyro, and fuel press. on my truck.

A few things I learned:

Get professional help. If I hadn't had Proram there, I would have needed couch time with a therapist due to the model year changes that make installation instructions obsolete.

The 3 gauge A-pillar pod from Geno's is not overly engineered, if you get my drift. It cannot be used by itself. It will look like crap as the plastic is not rigid enough to hold the required shape. The handle must be cut off of the original A-pillar cover to use it as a form with the geno's unit used as a new "skin". Even then, there is an ugly black allen bolt that is supplied to hold all of this in place using the top handle screw threads.

The instructions for the banjo fitting that allows you to connect a fuel pressure gauge showed using the rear fitting on the pump. It appears that this fitting is the return on the 04. 5, very little flow. Traced the line from the bottom of the filter, and it was the front one. I read 10 PSI at idle, and a minimum of 4 PSI at WOT. I wouldn't want to get much lower... it looks like ANY mods will require a bigger/stronger lift pump. I quess I should have gone with the 16 PSI gauge instead of the 30 PSI unit.

I should have also gone with the 60 PSI boost guage. My truck is totally stock, and if you go WOT with the turbo not spooled, it will overshoot and bounce off the 35 PSI gauge end-of-travel pin before the waste gate can open and settle on 31-32 PSI.

The pyro/EGT gauge is great and very fast acting. As swexlin stated, just messin' around on the way home empty, a WOT run for 5 to 10 seconds was 1250 degrees. Renegade Diesel wil soon have DPPI exhaust systems, turbo back, for the 04. 5 trucks. :D :D I'm gonna get me some of that. :D :D

The one problem swexlin didn't mention was that the gauge lighting instructions called for tapping in to the Orange w/ White stripe wire coming out of the head light switch assembly for the dash lights dimmer. On the 04. 5, there IS no Orange w/ White striped wire. In fact, the wires and pins are so small on the back of the switch, that I suspect that they go to relays and amplifiers before doing the real work of driving any loads. I will have to get a shop manual to see whick wire actually drives the dash lights.

Again, Scott, of Renegade Diesel was great at knowing all the little tricks that get the job done.

Thanks buddy. And let me know when the exhaust is available. We'll kill another Saturday under the truck!

Fred just added some very good information.

I'm leaning that direction also. Even thought these exhausts are pretty good from the factory, I think something a bit more freeflowing will really help lower EGTs.

That's what I was saying above. I was COMPLETELY lost. Scott basically just did it by eye, and a little testing with the circuit tester.

Fred, Geno's might let you exchange that. Wouldn't hurt to call.

Count me in. :D

Don't these trucks have 4 inch exhaust?

I could have swore mine was 4 inch from front to back, but I have 555,is there a difference in 4 inch exhaust?

the 555's have 4" from the muffler back. If you look under the truck just in front of the rear axle you will see where there is an adapter on the factory tail pipe stepping it up to 4"

Dont it start @ 4 in from the turbo?

Mine sure looks like 4 inch at the turbo,I will have to check again.

Fred, Scott, It was a pleasure working on your trucks, and a pleasure doing buissness with you both. Glad your happy with the installs, next time ya come up i PROMISE the shop will be more organized   I will be in contact as soon as i find out whats up with the exhaust systems.

again many thanks and i'll be talking to ya both soon,.

Scott @ Renegade Diesel Performance

I just went out and measured my exhaust form turbo to tail it is 4 inched, mine is not a 600 in is a 555,whats up with that?

I've measured mine too and it starts out at 3. 5" and grows to 4" someplace in the muff;)

The turbo seems to be 4" but the pipe immediately reduces to 3. 5 after the exhaust elbow.

Boost guage install

What is the boost bolt and where is it located. I just bought guages and don't need a lot of (er any more) brain damage. "04. 5" 600 engine

Is you di-procol exhaust temp gauge dark at the "8" reading (the top)

I'm wondering if:

1) that's the way they all are

2) the bulb or buld holder can be rotated 180 degrees and it will then illuminate the numbers and leave the bottom dark

3) mine's defective

Looking at my pyro this mrning on the way to work it was lit pretty much all the way around. A little darker at the top, but not much.

I just got my gage a couple of weeks ago from Geno's.
