I'm always open for suggestions.

Can you provide more details? Such as, what has to be remove? Oil supply line? Oil return tube? Unbolt turbo from exhaust?

Also, what gaskets, and / or orings are required?

Any trouble spots?

Thanks

There is really no need to remove the turbo. As long as you use the magnet when you drill and tap and some grease on the tap, you are good to go. I have installed 7 EGT probes in exhaust manifolds so far and i have never removed a turbo to do so. As soon as the truck starts, what little metal chips you missed will be blown out the exhaust harmlessly since the turbo is not spinning fast enough to cause damage.

I’m in the process of installing 2 SPA Gauges, Boost/EGT and Fuel Pressure/Water Temp. I’ve made a few discoveries and wanted to pass them along.

The easiest way to install the fuel pressure sending unit appears to be to attach it to one of the existing test ports. To do so, the most convenient way seems to be using an Aeroquip #2242-2-4S adapter. I haven’t had any luck finding one in stock locally, so I contacted the local Cummins shop and the said they would gladly order one for me (so cheap that I ordered 2). Theys guys were really nice and open till midnight. So if you are having trouble locating this adapter, try your local Cummins shop.

I’m about 99% sure that I’m going to install my EGT probe pre-turbo. I asked one our toolmakers about keeping chips out of the manifold. His suggestion on drilling was to magnetize the drill bit and to clean it often while drilling. Sounds like a good start. He thought that the grease method sounded like a good approach for tapping. I’ll report on how that works out after I’m done.

I’m going with a full pillar mount on the gauges, which means that I have to paint it. I went down to the Dodge dealer with intentions of ordering interior paint (agate). They said they don’t carry it and weren’t interested in ordering it either (they weren’t so picky when they ordered my truck)! So, I went to the local auto paint shop where they mixed a pint for me and also sold me a can of adhesion promoter. This little bit of stuff cost me as much as the gauge mount! What I didn’t get was complete instructions (drying times, numbers of coats, etc. ). I contacted a buddy who owns a body shop for instructions. I was surprised when he told me that he stocks all of the materials for mixing the interior paints, and could have mixed it and painted it for less than I pain for the supplies. Lesson – ask your local body shop for painting cost before doing it yourself, especially if you have a friend in the business.

I drilled my hole using grease on the drill bit--- also had one of those magnets on a flexible wire thing it worked great, got the drill shavings out, until I pushed it in to far-- IT GOT STUCK---I had to take the turbo off anyway to get that darn magnet out of it. Not only take it off but had to take it all apart to get the darn thing out. An easy job turned into an almost NIGHT MARE. Sheese
