Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Questions about 12v trucks

My truck is a 2000 quad cab short bed 2500 auto. This weekend I installed my pyro and boost gauges. My suspicion was correct and I'm getting what I think are high egts for my setup. The truck has an older Van Aaken box on it that just modifies timing and pulse. I posted a while back about climbing engine temps when pulling long grades empty and these are the times my egts are getting high. On about a mile and a half long pull today running 65 mph my egts climbed right up to 1200 and would've continued had I not eased off the go pedal. Boost was under 20 psi. Cruising at 60 mph and on the throttle just a hair up a small grade I'll get 900* with only about 6 psi of boost. I've been followed uphill and told there is no noticeable smoke. It is possible my injectors aren't stock.

I'm just fishing for comments. Can the simple box on my truck make me need to watch the go pedal so much when unloaded?

Putting more air to my engine would make me happier as well as a new exhaust setup for nothing more than lowering egts. But I'm not convinced this is where I should start.

I also have my transmission temp sender left to install. Where are you guys getting your little weld in bungs? I want to get that finished up this weekend.

Also, with my fp gauge is it necessary to fill the tube from the isolator to the gauge if my line there is only about 3 ft. long? The instructions are confusing and say to fill the isolator but not the tube if it's less than 6 ft. Then in says to bleed the air out of that line. How in the heck to you bleed air out of a sealed line? There's nothing to take its place.

Just looking for some experiences and comments. thanks!

I would get a boost fooler and turn buckle or j hook. You can purchase a j hook at www.piersdiesel.com, 39 bucks. This keeps the wastegate from opening so fast and lets the boost up to above 20 psi as I understand. You will need the boost fooler to trick the ecm and allow the boost to go above 20 PSI without defueling. I not really good at explaining so maybe some others will help.

Yes, next mod is more boost and a fooler. Where can I get just a fooler? My box doesn't do the fooling for me so when I crank the wastegate I need a fooler only but just don't know where to get one. Today's test showed I net exactly 18 pounds of boost and no more. That's not enough to make me happy.

Any other help??

Thanks

transmission temp line

Benny, you can get the "95 cooler line" to install the transmission temp sensor in, give Fred at Desert diesel parts a call, the line is listed under the Auto tran link on the webpage.

:)

You used to be able to get one from www.bd-power.com, but I do not see one there now. There was a thread about 6 months to a year ago, about a TDR member that made his own fooler from parts you get at radio shack. You might do a search on that. I would also call BD and some of the other venders to see if they have one. There are still people that prefer the injector only route and have to have a boost fooler. Also VA has a new module now that replaced the CPC. It is called the smartbox I think. It has a built in boost fooler. Sometimes these companies will do an upgrade program where you get credit for the old module. Might be worth checking in to.

I'll give some of that a try. . thanks.

Post in the classifieds for the boost fooler. I did and got one for relatively cheap (got to love TDR :) ).

After that run the J hook or turnbuckle for more boost. I have the boost fooler with my VA box, and it works just fine. I never ran the setup without the RV275 injectors, but I would figure you should get around 24-26 psi for boost.

4" exhaust makes a nice difference for dropping your EGTs. Especially later if you are still having issues after getting more boost.

BennyHL, what would happenn if you take off the VA box (disconnect it) and try the same hill or test drive then. Just to make sure its the box giving you the egt's. If there are aftermarket injectors in the truck, you will find out soon enough.

I think a 2000 auto still has an HX-35 not an HY-35-(might be wrong). If it is an HX-35 you will need a boost elbow, not a j-hook. At any rate, you should be seeing a bit more boost even stock, my truck would push 20psi when it was bone stock. I would lean towards a boost leak somewhere, also elevation makes a big difference in boost/egt numbers as well.

I had the same situation, old style VA, no fooler. EGT's went high real fast. I threw on a boost fooler and elbow and saw 30 psi with no more EGT problem, couldn't hit 1000 if I tried, and I did, keep in mind I live on Long Island, so hills aren't available for a true test. I was thinking that there might be injectors in my truck due to that pressure, but I can't bring myself to remove the boxes to see what kind or boost I would get without em.

Tom

Thanks guys. Let me go figure which turbo I got and then I'll try the classifieds for a boost fooler or something. Exhaust is next, but I'm curious as to what more boost and a fooler will do.

I live at about 2000' about sea level and work is about 1000' above sea level give or take. I'm gonna fine more than 18 psi =]

Tom,

Sounds like what I got. Hopefully my results will the be the same.

I might unplug the box one day for fun.

Anybody else help me out with the bung for my transmission or where I can get a "snubber"? thanks
