What gauges do you need and what is nice to have? Here are my perceptions as of now.

1. EGT -- must have even a stock truck to tell you to lighten up or ya gonna melt a piston.

2. transmission temp -- must have if you tow with a automatic stock or bombed still need it

3. Fuel pressure -- need it to know when the POS lift pump goes so you don't burn you fuel metering pump

4. Boost -- why? Other than to know your turbo is blowing more air... if I had to give up one this looks like it

I want to put all my gauges on a 3 pillar mount . I think a EGT in a dial gauge is better to see driving than digital so the EGT BOOST and BOOST by spa is out for that combo.

Not really concern with cost just want to make sure my truck is monitored correctly.

Need your thoughts

gauges and final answer

I have a new toy also--almost 5k miles. i'm doing the same search etc. I've pretty much come to the same conclusion. SPA gauges are very pricey. They have an appeal--two gauges in each gauge. Geno's garage has double gauges by Westach which are double also and the A pillar mount. I believe they are turbo and EGT on one and oil tempX2 on one. Fuel pressure appears to be necessary also to watch the injector pump. Lift pumps are relatively cheap compared to the Bosch! I'll probably add a low pressure pusher pump back by the tank, also. Auto Zone has generic pumps for only a few bucks, but I can't remember the i/o size.

IMHO you need all four gauges. With that said, I have EGT, TRANS, and BOOST in the A pillar and will be instaling a FUEL gauge in my ashtray (since I don't use it). I prefer Autometer and bought mine through Diesel Dynamics as a kit (DD is a great copmany to deal with) and the gauges look very close to the stock dashboard gauges colorwiae (what I was looking for). As for your perceptions on the gauges: You are correct and the Boost gauge is there I believe more as a diagnostic tool as is the Fuel pressure gauge. (Guys correct me if I'm wrong, thanks)

Hope my limited experience is helpful. Good luck in your choice of gauges.

It would be really nice to have the same tint as the rest of the dash , The Banks gauges are lacking in that department. Looks like I might have to switch over to the Autometers.

gauges

The Westach gauges have an appeal since they are double analog gauges in each gauge. two gauges would give you EGT, boost, and oil and transmission temp and leave a hole in the three gauge pillar mount for a fuel pressure gauge. Has any body tried these gauges?

Granted, maybe it's overkill, but I'm going with a Westach dual combo fuel pressure gauge, their part number 2DC3-201 along with 2 of Ray's 1/8"NPT-tapped banjo bolts and 2 of Grandpappy's custom-made braided stainless steel lines. This will allow me to monitor lift pump discharge pressure (before the fuel filter), VP44 inlet pressure (after the fuel filter) and fuel filter differential pressure. Since I have a 6-speed, I don't need transmission temp, so I'm going with a 2-gauge pillar mount pod with the Westach combo boost/EGT gauge (PN 2DC2-30SS) for the 2nd gauge.

Even though my 2002 has the spring-loaded intercooler hose clamps, I think the boost gauge provides other useful information, especially for towing applications like ours.

I purchased the pyro and boost gauges from Joe at Fast Lane West. Excellent prices. Perform a search and you should find his number. My copy is up in Phoenix right now.

Pyro is critical, but I agree with the boost. It is useful to monitor the Turbo clamps for loss of boost, as well as watching for wastegate malfunction. You can also use it as the "economy gauge" that was so popular back in the 80's. Just keep the boost from moving in city, but on the highway it will always read something unless you are going downhill. When towing, it is great to note a headwind.

If you have the quartz interior, the Ultra Lights look great on the A-Pillar.

gauges

Rusty,

Do you have a source for the Westach dual pressure gauge? Geno's garage lists the dual temp gauge and the boost/EGT gauge, but the only fuel pressure gauge I see is a single----haven't called them tho... ... the three gauge pillar mount with that gauge setup should give one peace of mind... ..... or maybe worry the h***out of you????????

Herb,

I've been dealing directly with Westach. Their website is www.westach.com For pricing or application info, you can e-mail Roger Westberg at -- email address removed -- - that's who gave me the part number for the dual fuel pressure gauge as it's not a catalog item. My gauges are supposed to ship today, so we'll see... .

Rjc,

Q: Is the dual combo guage from Westach an electrical gauge and have a 15psi. max also? Anybody think reading more is necessary? Wouldn't want to have to upgrade gauges later if I go with a pusher pump at some point.

Q: Who is Grandpappy that makes those steel braided lines?

Q: How much (ballpark) for the Westach?
