Can't comment on the trany sender since I have the stick but put your thermocoupler in the exaust manifold just before the turbo. You'll have to drill & tap (not as hard as it sounds) threads in the manifold. I can't remember the size, been too long.

Task

Get a transmission (hot) line from DTT. This unit is from a 95 I believe and has the port built in. Much better to get temps from theis line than from the pan.

Pyro, as George said. Measure twice before you drill.

Thanks for your help guys,

I will call DTT about that line for the trans. and close my eyes when I drill the hole in exhaust . MIKE

EGT

drilling and tapping for the EGT probe is more scary than difficult. the manifold is fairly soft. put some heavy grease on the drill, then on the tap. when tapping, advance the tap about 1-1 1/2 turns, then back out a bit, and advance again. before you put the probe in, "sweep" the inside of the manifold with a small round mechanic's magnet. be sure and put anti sieze on the coupling which you put in the manifold. :)

drilling manifold

Just to be safe I unbolted my turbo and duct taped off the opening of the turbo while drilling the manifold. Made it real easy to get in there and clean out all the drillings. Takes an extra 10 minutes and you know that the turbo is safe. :)

Guages

Hi Folks

New Guy here. Just bought a 2001 QC 4X4 last week with 8k on it. I have been a Jeep Nut for 15 years+ and have been building rebuilding and modifying Jeeps. Have an 86 460 Ford that the Dodge is replacing. What a difference! I love this truck and inside of a week have hatched into a Turbo Diesel Nut. (my wife is scared) I've been goin through the TDR archives studying up on what works and what doesn't. Plans include Edge-EZ, BHAF (could use a link to designs for the Mallory mount), Drop the muff and silencer ring, and auto transmission upgrade.

First and foremost gonna put some guages on the pillar to keep an eye on stuff before and after mods.

My simple question is: When instaling the guages (EGT, transmission temp, Boost)does it required rilling through the firewall, or is there a place that DC thoughtfully left room to poke the guage leads through? If you have to drill where is the recomended location?

Sorry for the long post, just happy to have found such a wealth of first hand information.

Mark :D :D :D

Mark,

Welcome to the TDR! I ran my boost, EGT, and electrical wires for my fuel pressure gauge though the the firewall where the main wiring harness goes through. Look on the driver side behind the power distribution box in the engine bay. You'll see it.

Hope this helps.

Look in behind the brake pedal. There is a rubber boot abot 3" in diameter where other wireing harneses go through. You can poke a hole throuh there for additional wires etc. I just bundle them together and use a cloths hanger for a fish wire. Tape them all together and pull them through all at one time. If you use the A piller mount there is enough of a gap between the dash and the steel a piller to fish wires through also. Have Fun!:p

with the auto transmission, you can use the hole in the firewall where the clutch goes through on the manual transmission trucks. rubber there pierces fairly easily. give the folks at www.smokindiesel.com a call--good service and prices on gauges. i just got my isspro ev's in, and quite happy with them. :)

guages

Thanks for all the good info! Gonna order up some guages this week. And I will take the turbo off when drilling and tapping the manifold. ;)

I have two SPA digital gauges in my truck, one does Boost/EGT and the other is Fuel Press and (someday will be) transmission Temp. The links in my signature do not work any more so I do not have a pic. I could email you one if you want.

digital gauges

fd5 i think several folks are running digitals. SPA's may be the most popular. Dakota Digital has some also, and Summit Racing sells a brand--Nord---something i can't remember. dakota's are a blue display, the NOrd. . are red, and the SPA's are black on a sort of green background. digital gauges are kinda like beauty. if you like 'em, you like 'em. they're a bit too "busy" for me. i like my Isspro EV's

Couple quick comments, I have a SPA dual digital guage and love it. Also I didn't see where any one mentioned the web cast in the center of the exhaust manifold. When I installed my EGT probe it was reccomended that the manifold be tapped in the center of the rear half of the manifold about 1" to 1. 5" infront of the flange mounting the turbo. Please do a search, there are some exellent reccomendations on this site.
