It was changed with the introduction of the 24 valve in 98. 5

There could be some early 24 valves with the old cover though.

Actually it was some time in 99 - noone knows exactly when. All '98. 5's are succeptable to the KDP and some 99's. I've overs off of a 99 that didn't have the step in them personally. I used the KDP jig on my 98. 5 24v and it worked great btw.
 
KDP= Killer dowel pin. If it falls out the tight clearance between cam gears and cover cause cracked cover and oil leak. If gets in between gears broken gears bent bent cam?? -- In other words BAD JUJU!! Does not happen often but if it does whoo- boy. Search for KDP and there is more inf in the threads.
