I was wondering if the only choices in gear ratios for the Dana 80 were 3:54 and 4:10 ?? Sure would be nice to have something in the middle  ... . ?

Kev

The new trucks seem to come in 3. 73 and 4. 10 . You used to get 3. 54 and 4. 10. I like the new gear ratio (3. 73) myself. I currently have a 3. 54 and would rather have the 3. 73

When I changed the ratio in my truck we checked and could not find 3. 73's for the Dana 80. We were looking at genuine Dana parts, and it's possible they are available from other manufacturers.

BTW, I beleive I made the right gear selection for what I am pulling. On the freeway without the fifth wheel the RPM's at 70 MPH = 2300. This is a little high and not so good for fuel economy, but at 62 MPH with the fifth wheel I'm at 2,000 RPM and she really pulls nice there.

If I had a little lighter trailer say 5,000 to 8,000 lbs I think the 3. 73's would be a great compromise.

Jim

Seems like that 3. 31 would be nice for racing, by keeping you in that great torque area of our Cummins', of course spooling might be an issue.

I swapped.......

And it was genuine Dana parts.

With the weight of my truck I love the 3:73 gear set. Good around town and good on the freeway. Now instead of winding out it stays in the power band when pulling hills and around town it doesn't lug like the 3:54's did.

4:10, 3:54 and now 3:73, absolutely no mileage change between the three. Your results may be different. I have a good mix of town and freeway driving so what I gain on one end I lose on the other.

 No Mileage change? Wow, that is ultimately what I was hoping for, but again it would be nice to not be churning 2200+ rpms to maintain 70mph.

Thanks for all the info...

AKoperdak, the 3rd Gen. trucks don't use a Dana 80 rear end anymore. They dropped Dana and went with American Axle ( the same company that makes the GM 14 bolt ). As Big White Beast has shown a 3. 73 gear is available for the 80 but DC did not offer it in the 2nd Gen. trucks.

Dodge doesn't offer the 3. 73:1 ratio for the D80. But F*rd does. The parts are Dana parts so Dana distributors can get them.

my bad

Tarussel,

I had forgotten all about DC changing to another axle. Thanks for keeping me honest.

I wonder if you can order the American 3. 73 and put it in a Dana80. I bet that would solve some problems.

R,

Andy

Putting the American Gears in the Dana 80 Housing? Surely you jest.

Seriously, though I think the American axle has a larger ring gear diameter (10. 75"? 11"?) and won't work.

If it DOES work, I need you to come show me how to bolt up a Ford C-6 automatic to my big block 440 mopar... ... you are a better mechanic than I am!

Hohn,

Maybe I am not remember my techmanual well but I believe that a Dana 80 has an 11 inch gear. I offered the American to Dana as joke. If you buy enough beer and bailing wire I will show you how to mount a C6 to a Hemi. Duck tape will cut install time in half.

:)

Here are the F*rd P/N's for Dana 80 rearends

Ratio Part Number

3. 73 F8IZ-4209-EA

4. 10 F8IZ-4209-FA

4. 30 F8IZ-4209-CA

4. 63 E8TZ-4209-AA

4. 88 F8IZ-4209-DA

5. 13 F6TZ-4209-AB

5. 38 F8IZ-4209-GA

The Dana 80 has a 11. 25" ring gear dia. and the American Axle has a 11. 5" ring gear dia. . I would still rather have a Dana Axle in my truck, just hard headed I guess... ... ... .

Duct Tape works wonders when parts don't match up. Ha, Ha.

That's true..........

When going from a 3 series gear to a 4 series or vice versa the carrie needs to be changed also.

If you went from 3:54 to 3:73 you'd be fine. If you went from 4:10 to 3:73 a carrier change is needed also.

My original switch was a swap with someone so I avoided that cost. Once I had the 3:54 it was relatively cheap to swap to 3:73.

Garrett

When I went from the 3. 54's to 4. 10's it did not require a change in the carrier. I assume that going the other direction would be the same.

Was that a Dana 80?????

I have heard the same from other people but they all had the Dana 70 rears. Not sure what the difference is but there must be some.
