I know nothing about ring gears... or gears in general. When I bought this truck at 67K I changed the differential fluid. From the look of the fluid it was original. This Royal Purple 75W90 has been in, along with the Mag-Hytec pan, for about 20,000 miles.

The question is - can anyone tell me if this looks ok? The truck is a pure hobby, I really don't tow or haul much. I just want to know whether or not there are any obvious red flags.

Thank you!

Thanks guys! I'll sleep better tonight:)

I'm about to spend some $$ on a transmission and turbo... it's good to know the rest of the truck is doing ok!

DId you get it ok?? Look for junks of metal, broken teeth. It was just routine maintenance right?? If i knew you had it opened, I could have probably stopped by this weekend and gave it me ol "expert opinion" :) No transmission yet?? You could still call the guy I suggested. :)

Yup, just routine maintenance. The cover wasn't going to come off but the drain plug on my mag-hytec was siezed solid. I remember it being on there tight when I put it on and thinking "I'll get it some other time"!

I figured that it isn't a bad thing to take a look inside once every 20K or so. The fluid that came out looked nice and clear, especially compared to the gunk that came out the first time (original owner).

Thanks for your willingness to come over, the original trans is still in the works. Thanks for the suggestions!

Regards,

John

They have always looked scored to me but the surface is smooth. There were never any bits of metal in the fluid, even with 67K on the original fluid (not my truck then).

Snoking, what are you seeing that you don't like? Of course I really liked hearing all of the positive feedback, but one thing I love about this site is all of the different opinions.

The cover is back on and the new fluid is in, so I really don't have an opportunity for more pics.

Thanks!

John
