I've been trying to locate a 5 gallon bucket of Texaco 1874 MTX gear oil for the NV5600 6 speed transmission. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can buy 5 gallons? I would prefer NOT to buy the quart size bottles from DC since they are like 20. 00 a quart. Do you know if they are any cheaper from GM?

Thanks in advance,
Charles

Try "Cummins" if you have one close by or any big rig supply company.

Your local Dodge dealer should be selling the NV5600 fluid for $10. 50 a quart plus tax. That came right out of the dealers book last week. It is also the fluid for the NV 3500 transmission also... ... ... Pete

I read on this board, and was also told by my local distributor that Texaco is no longer selling this product in the 5 gallon pail. I'm guessing it was low volume, and/or DC and GM asked Texaco to quit undercutting them. Locally, it was about $1 cheaper per quart purchased from GM.
Those organizing rallies should add one new event: Someone buys a 55 gallon drum of MTX 1874, and sells this stuff for ~$3 per quart, bring your own container!

I'll take some. Can't find it anywhere but the Dealer #ad

Does anybody know what synthetic is being sold by DC for us that do a lot of heavy towing? I understand there is a MOPAR number but since they don't manufacturer synthetic, I don't think, I would like to find the same kind they use for both NV5600 trans and limited slip rear end. If all else fails I guess I go with AMSOIL. Like to find this stuff cheaper without having to rob a bank!!! #ad

FJ40,
I went thru this back in February. You're correct, Dodge dealers wanted $20+ per quart. Some Texaco distributors claim they can not get the MTX in 5 gallon pails. I found 2 local distributors that were able to order it. Came in within 3 weeks. Price was approximately $8. 70 PER GALLON, so total cost for a 5 gallon pail was right around $50. 00. You should be able to call up the Texaco website, and find some local distributors close to you. Just start callin'.
THERE IS A CHEAPER SOLUTION THAN DODGE !

I looked in the yellow pages and found a Texaco distributor listed, it in Winchester VA. They didn't stock it but orderd it and was in a week later, $49. 00. They wouldn't deliver since I didn't have an account so had to drive 110 miles each way to pick it up.

Okay, one more time,,,,Part number-4874464 is for the NV 5600 and the NV 3500 trannys in Dodge trucks... . It is $10. 50 at YOUR local Dodge dealer..... Pete

The NV600 xmsn in my truck had two tags on it stating that if any gear oil other than Mopar 4874464 or the Texaco equivalent were used I would void my warranty. I asked the head mechanic at the dealership I bought the truck and he said the 4874464 was a synthetic oil. The 4874464 I put in my NV5600 said on the bottles it was made from petroleum distillates. That's not synthetic. Also saw here that only the MOPAR 4874464 has the carrect blend for proper operation of the NV5600 synchromesh gears. I paid $8. 00 a quart at the dealer.

Pete,
Maybe at YOUR Dodge dealer it was $10. 50 a quart, but at MY dealer, they wanted $20. 00+ a quart, but what's the difference, you can still get it from a Texaco distributor for $10. 00 a GALLON. In any case, Dodge is still ripping everyone off, just some dealers maybe more than others. . And yes, that is the correct Mopar part # for the fluid.

For anyone interested, or chemists in the group... .

On the Texaco pail the product code is 1874. The label also shows "MTX FLUID 12550"
It is considered hazardous, by OSHA
The product chemical names and percent are;

dewaxed heavy paraffinic petroleum distillates 65-79. 99%
benzene 10-19. 99%
methacrylic acid 3- 9. 99%
hydrotreated heavy paraffinic pertoleum
distillates 3- 9. 99%
solvent-refined light naphthenic petroleum distillate 1- 2. 99%
sulfonic acids,petroleum,magnesium salts
1- 2. 99%
All it takes is a few changes, or another friend with a 6-speed to make it worthwhile to purchase by the pail.

I think it might be worthwhile for local TDR members in a city to pitch in an purchase a 55 gallon drum and split it up. The 5 gallon size is discontinued. I heard DC and GM were complaining about to Texaco about undercutting their profit margins. On the 5 gallon pail there is a writing that says, "Restricted product to GM. "

I was lucky enough to find a 5 gallon bucket from a fellow TDR member who happen to have ordered it for his NV4500 and realized it would not work.
