What weight gear oil should I run? I have done a lot of reading and don’t know if I should run 75W90 or 75W140. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

for the climate you are in being in cali, you can get by with the 75w140. if you were up north where it gets cold in winter, i'd stick with the 75w90

D/c recomends a specific 75 wt synthetic for the american axles P# 5102232aa if that is the info you were looking for.

Bob

75w90 and 75w140 will do the same in the cold. 75w140 would be better than 80w90 in the cold.

Thanks for all the info. Since I only tow a couple time a year I have been considering 75W90, but any additional info. would be greatly appreciated.

75-140

75-140 is NOT recommended by DC for use in the American Axle Manufacturing axles on the 3rd gen Dodges. Will it hurt your axle; I don't know; will DC honor your warranty if your axle fails and your not using a DC (or an SAE equivalent) approved lubricant for the specific axle on your truck? They will tell you to read the owners/service manual. Only the 75W-90 synthetic (PN 5102232AA) is approved for use in the American Axle Manufacturing axles used on the 3rd gen trucks. Ken Irwin

Ken, there's a TSB that calls for 75W-140 synthetic in the rear axles of the 2500/3500 trucks.

I don't think that site is correct though. If you go to the dealer and have them print the TSB it says 75W-90. Even TDR issue 45 or 46 (can't remember specifically which) says 75W-90 in the the 3rd Gen, TSB section. Plus, onwers/service manuals with the latest rev say 75W-90.

Do you think pointing to an independent website is going to provide much leverage if you do end up having a problem and are not using a proper spec'ed 75W-90 oil?

I'll use 75-140 if......

I've had the pinion seal changed twice.

1st. leak was with LE 607 oil and a MAG-HYTEC cover.

2nd leak was with the stock cover and Mobil 75-90 full syn. ( On this seal change, the changed the yoke also. )

If it leaks a 3rd time, of course before warranty expires DC goning to fix it, once i get it home, i'm going to 75-140 to see if it holds better.

Nothing like a leaky pinion seal at 22,000 miles.

PS: I pray to the vibration Gods that I don't get the dreaded drive train vibration etc. . None of that yet...

How bad was your leak? I have a little residue around where the drive shaft connects to the axle with some residue even on the corner of the fuel tank as well. Although there is never a drop of oil in the driveway.

oil leak

First one was bad. Sprayed oil all over the fuel tank, exhuast pipe etc.

Second one I saw starting to come out and darken the pinion housing.

I have this gut feeling its gonna leak again. it seems to do it during towing my 5th wheel.

Larry Miller on Bell rd has been real good and decent service too.

Darn, I may have to take mine in then. I thought it may have been seeping while towing as well. I take mine to Larry Miller too but I've only had it in once after the first month I bought it. It was also a seal but it was on the other end of the drive shaft... the transfer case yoke seal. It was like the first leak you described. I think my problem is the truck may have been sitting at the dealership to long... manfactured in 8/03 and bought 6/04.

Sorry to steal your thread Matt.

The TSB referenced is not the correct one

I had my trusty Dodge Dealer service manager print me out a copy of TSB 03-001-04 Rev A. Although this is the correct number, it is not the same as the one referenced above via the TSB link. On the 2nd page there is a table and the ONLY DC approved lubricant for DR 2500/3500 trucks with American Axle Manufacturing axles is 75W-90 synthetic Oo. Oo. . I say again if you use 75W-140 synthetic you "are your own warranty station". Note also that the title of the TSB referenced above is "power door locks do not unlock the rear doors", someone cut and pasted but left out page two information.

I will email TDR admin and see if we can get the TSB data base corrected.

Now can anyone answer the real question: What does American Axle Manufacturing say about 75W-140 synthetic? Ken Irwin

Karl,

No problem.

Now does anyone have a list of DC approved lubricants? I was considering Redline 75W90.

Thanks again for all the good info.

Matt

I can fax you this TSB if you would like or

I don't think you will find a "list" of approved lubricants. I can check the bottle or the service manual tonight and see what it says about the SAE ratings for the oil Dodge sells. Ken Irwin
