My 16 2500 owners manual suggests replacing the diff fluid at 20,000 miles if towing frequently. It makes no mention of miles to change if towing in-frequently. What is the consensus out there?
 
At 20k my fluid was TOAST!!! When towing taking off turning the rear started grabbing similar to being on a hard surface in 4wd. I had the fluid tested and it was BAD.

Running AMZ/OIL SevereGear since with zero issues. I use the 75-110 since I tow heavy at 33-35k combined.

and how often do you change your gear oil now?
 
My friend, a service tech, recommended changing differential oil every 30k on my Ram 5500. All my miles are towing. He also recommends fuel filters at 15k. trans fluid change at 30k. He recommends oil and filter change at 6k regardless of oil type. He knows I do my maintenance in house. From what I am reading here I will be changing the differential at 15k. I will have it tested and report the findings here. Am running a 2018 5500. Automatic trans. Cummins engine. 4:88 gear with the 19.5 heavy ply tire size. If I had a chance to reorder I would go with the 4:10 gear even with the taller tires. It runs about 2200 rpm at 70 mph. Over 60 mph with empty 9000lbs trailer causes oil and water temps to increase. The indicators do not say it is overheating but 213 seems too high for water temps to me.
 
I developed a slight shudder as I pulled away from a stop sign turning left or right on a slight incline..... like coming off the freeway onto an overpass.... I at first thought it was the transmission but realized it was only on the turn and not as I pulled through the stop sign....

I changed the diff fluid with a full synthetic using the 75-140 as recommended by Amsoil....there severe duty fluid.... The shudder immediately stopped... now maybe 30K miles later I'm ready to do it again....

I was reading note from Allison on their 3000 transmission.... they suggest regular changes and special fluid when the truck has an exhaust brake or engine brake... after the shudder I see the need for more frequent changes....

YUP get that MOPAR I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER outta there!!!

No I saw it, I just assumed you were setting again and another AMZ/OIL truck passed you since the stuff is so popular they are on the road all the time.

Mopar and amsoil are over priced junk. Good ole supertech 75w90 in 6 Ram Cummins and not one, "oh It's starting to shudder so I better change it out".
 
My turck runs at 10K lbs empty and I run Mobil delvac synthetic gear oil and trans fluid in the trans and transfer case. I won't waist my money on the "I'M the best oil in the world." And this from an old Valvoline oil fan.
 
Like Cummins12V98, I do things in numbers I can easily remember. Oil, oil filter and fuel filters every 15k miles. Along with that I do the transmission, transmission filters, transfer case and both differentials every 60K miles.

Although not a cheap investment, I've installed Mag-Hytek covers on trans and both differentials. No more removing the diff covers unless I want to check the gearing because they have drain plugs. So does the trans pan. Each one is larger than stock and holds more fluid plus they have external fins to help dissipate heat.

Synthetic everywhere.

Over the years I've collected the right tools, large enough oil pan, and plastic hoses to keep the mess at a minimum. :)

I don't know if other companies have done it yet, but you can get Amsoil gear oil in bags. No more pumping the oil into the diffs.

The only problem is greasing that stupid u-joint. :mad::mad::mad:
