Gear Pullers

What do you have, what do you like? I'm thinking of getting this set, but wonder if I'd be better served buying the puller and hammer as separate items.



I like the idea of the "cage" on the posi-locks.

I bought the complete Snap On cabinet , and some , you can by pice by pice same price , the reason is the best pullers , and the parts interchange to make many differant pullers , every other thing I've seen they were deadicated for limited use , its hard to explain if you haven't seen or used a cabinet set.

Posi lock pullers are very nice, I have a few that I use from time to time, and I also have a separate slide hammer set, that set comes with a number of different adapters and you can apply clamping pressure on the puller, and I use the crap out of it... it's amazing how much easier a job can be with that tool.

My first puller

Just took delivery of the one below. $80 from Sears (McMaster-Carr wants $105 for the exact same unit). It's a real beauty. Very heavy, and much larger in person than I thought it would be. It's opening range is 0. 5" - 5", which I think will cover about 90% of the pulling jobs I need.



Next I'm going to get the OTC/Matco slide hammer everyone seems to like.

I've been looking at a 4" angle grinder so I might as well add the PosiLock to the order.

The gear puller looks very good in person. When I bought it I did notice a smaller version that might be good in tight situations when the larger one is not needed. It might be a future additon.

Yeah, it's a pretty large puller. Have you tried it out yet?

Have not used it yet, but the disassembly of a 1950 automobile is imminent! I'm sure it will be put to the test soon.

Don't forget to lube the threads with some anti-seize before using it. There's stickers all over it with warnings of a voided warranty for failure to properly lubricate.

I have used them for about 10 years now and will not even look at another puller. But I look at the price now versus what I paid for them then and I wish gas prices would do the same went way down in price. That doesn't happen to often anymore.

We have the 5 ton Posi-Lock puller at work. Tough pig. We've even put a 3/4" impact (with 120 PSI going into it) on the thing. Didn't seem to hurt it all. Still works great.



The toughest thing we've probably used it on, was removing a huge sprocket off of a Deere 876 manure spreader. Even use anti-sieve, but ALWAYS a ***** to remove. If they'd grease the bearing once in a while I wouldn't have to keep pulling it off every other year.
