This may be a stupid question, but I have heard so many different things that I want a final right answer. What is the stock front and rear differential gear ratio on a 2001 Dodge Ram. I have heard that the front and the rear are supposed to be the same so 4 wheel drive can be used anytime. I have also been told that they are different because of the fact that the drive shaft is shorter in the front. And finally ever since I bought the truck, everytime I engege 4 wheel drive on dry pavement the truck kind of bounces in the font. Can anyone acount for that.
 
What you are experiencing on dry pavement is normal,due to the distance traveled by the front and rear wheels being different any time you are turning. PM me the last 8 of your vin,I can tell you what your truck was built with

Your truck is either 3. 54 or 4. 10 ratios, both where offered in 01. If I had to guess I would be you had 3. 54 as that is what most dealers order when buy trucks for the lot. If I remember correctly you can climb under the back and look for the tag on the bolts that hold the cover on the rear end. It might have the ratio on it, or PM that VIN to Bob and he can tell you what it was built with.

Whats the reason for putting a truck in 4wd on dry pavement? Your front and rear diff must be the same ratio, and you must not mix tires/sizes. This keeps internal parts spinning and moving as close together as possible. I say these things because I ALWAYS up-sized tires and need to scrounge up a spare. I would remove the factory spare so any other drivers that may be in my truck and got a flat did not change a 265 in with a 315.

I think the Dodge and Chevy's used identical gears front and rear. However Ford used to have the front a hair faster, not sure about now days.



For example a 4. 10 rear was matched to a 4. 09 front, 4. 56 rear, 4. 55 front.
