2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Gear shifter noise

I have or should I say had a unremitting rattling noise coming from the gear shifter in fifth gear. It would go away with small amount of pressure put on the shifter knob. Today I reached up and put pressure on the arm instead of the shifter ball noise did not subside as normal. Reached up and put pressure on shift knob noise goes away. I pull the knob off put the stock one back on no worries all fixed. This was an eight ball size knob with adapter to make it fit the threads problem was the thread adapter is a tad to small in diameter tomorrow I am going to locktite the thread adapter that should cure the problems. Hope this helps some one.
