Where to take a broken RV (5er) in the NW.

Reese Trailer Sway Control

just a question for you eth owners out there with the ez. i've pulled a 13k trailer over a 6% grade with my truck before the ez. and it would pull 4th gear 40-45-mph. but one of the local powerstroke boys here pulls 13 cows over the same pass at 50mph. thats a 20k trailer. that means for me to keep up i would have to be in 5th. this just doesn't seem possible with just the addition of the ez. since i couldn't hold 5th once i got on the hill. i am thinking of installing a set of dd2's maybe this will help. but it drives me crazy that all he has put in his truck is a bd chip. he has an auto and maybe his gear ratio transmission ratio is perfect for pulling this combination. but it's getting close to start movin those cows and i would hate to be followin a powerstroke with my new dodge.

any suggestions?

Try posting on General Diesel, PowerWagon (Mark Koskenmaki) has a formula that will tell how much HP is required to maintain a given speed at a predetermined grade and load. Armed with that info, it should be a simple matter of getting the Ram up to it's full allocation of power.

Might try posting on the 24v forum also.

Good luck

Sooner or later fellas,we're gonna have to realize the powerstroke is for real. I love my cummins, but the powerstroke is not a flowerpoke or powerchoke like so many call it.
just my . 2c

Exactly why my Dodge RAM has 4. 10 gears.

If your gonna pull - get a bigger gear.

I put up with 2400 RPM at 75 mph, but it sure is easier on the truck when I'm pulling.

I would bet money the flower poke has a 3. 73 and maybe a 4. 10 axle,that would definately make a difference.

, did I read that right, 13 cows plus trailer = 20-k total gross trailer weight #ad
. This guy with the "flower poke" is "out of control" #ad
#ad
. His truck must be at least a 550 with 4:10's. What size diff do you have? And what speed transmission do ya have? ( 5 or 6 speed. ) I pull a 15k 5er up a 6% grade at 62 MPH (check my sig #ad
).

Here's my suggestion. If you have a 5 speed then get a splitter (US Gear). If you have an ETH then I'm assuming you have a 6 speed, if this is true and your truck is a 2wd then I would switch to 4:10s. If you have an ETH 4WD then BOMB the snot out of it #ad
.

Please post the powerchoke's specs. I'd like to know what size ford it takes to pull that kind of weight?

Also, post your trucks specs and the weight your pulling so we can figure out how to get you up that “Mad cow hill” faster than that darn flowerpoke #ad

all he's got is a 350 4x4 drw. as far as his performance all he is got is a bd chip good for 50hp and 105trq. are you pulling a 15k trailer at 62mph? if so what gear/rpm. i have a 6 speed with 3. 5x gears and the only way i could get 62 is 5th gear. i understand he has lower gears than i do but i also have more gears than he does.

Hey CUMINNTSTRKN,

Add your truck description / mods to your sig line so we can see what ya got and better help you spank that PSD. LOL. I pull heavy grades in direct drive (5th gear) I have a 3:54 diff and HEAVILY BOMBED #ad
#ad
#ad
. About 375 hp to the rear wheels (All 4 of them #ad
). I would suggest DD3's, 4" exhaust, 16 cm turbo housing and don’t forget that pyro gage #ad
. We don’t want any liquid metal coming out yer tail pipe #ad
.

With my EZ on my otherwise-stock (not even with the boost elbow installed) ETH and 4. 10 gears, I can pull a 6% grade (the Sunol grade for you Bay Area types) at 60 mph all the way to the top, with a GCWR of 19,500 lbs (Lance camper loaded and full, plus car on flatbed car trailer).

If I switch my USGear OD on, I do it in 5th at the same speed.

CUMINNTSTRKN,
From the way you worded your message, it sounded like maybe you haven't pulled that grade since after you got the EZ. Is that the case? If so, you may find that you are going to be just fine without further significant upgrades. From what I hear, exhaust and pyro should be tops on your list, especially with a box on the ETH. But I'm going to be real surprised if you need much more than that to keep up.

In another one of your posts you claimed 258 hp on your stock ETH and 290 with an EZ. If you go over to the Ford site and look at the numbers from their recent chip test (or shoot out?) you'll find that your stock numbers are as good as many of those chips in the Ford they were dynoing. At 290 hp you've got them all beat. From what I've read on that site, there aren't too many PSDs over 300 horse unless major bucks have been spent. Also, the Edge folks did a dyno test on a brand new 250 rated hosre PSD with a 70 hosre chip and 4" exhaust. Their results were, coincidently, also 258 hp.

Hey RobG,

Those 19. 5 Rickson wheels should put you at the same final gear ratio as me. I had the option 4:10's at the lot and opted for the 3:54 due to the 6 speed and OA bed height. How much did those Rickson raise your OA bed height? Do you pull a 5th wheel and if so did you have to raise your trailer height to get enough clearance between your trailer and the top of your bedside?

well i'm bringing this back to the top. i just pulled the cows today. the grade was 8% not 6%. the power stroke pulled 45mph and i pulled 60mph!!!!! i was able to keep egt's to about 1300 at 60mph. if i get a 4"exhaust or a turbo upgrade i think 65mph is possible. all i need is 150-200 temp drop. i was in 5th gear. i am so impressed with my dd2's and my comp box in the ez setting.

If you keep pulling 1300 egts you wont have to worry about a chip or injectors. You can go out and buy a Cummins RV engine. Plus while the engines out you can get a different clutch and pressure plate. Not trying to ruin your fun just being realistic. Just read your sig. I see you allready have a better clutch

According to Banks, 1300 degrees PRE turbo is their recommended max for the Cummins - at least my older '91...

For SURE, when pulling top rated loads, GEARING is the name of the game! It's ALSO generally true that all things being equal, a stock Ford PS will outpull a stock Dodge/Cummins. The best WE can do is take advantage of the many aftermarket mods to improve our power - the Cummins is certainly capable of FAR more power output WITH reliability than the PS diesels are. I would suggest the guy that STARTED all this get one of the propane injection units like my Power Shot 2000 setuo - it's the frosting on the cake for easy power AND economy!
