what is it how does it work? i drove a truck yesterday that has one and i dont know if your supposed to whift it or what it was all i know is that i didnt know  so he who knows enlighten me please

my company is buying me a truck and the guy wanted 20,000 for an 02 with 90,000 on the clock and 400 on the new engine. the truck is a dually with all the extras the gear splitter and exhaust break.

what does the boss say?... . isnt that kinda high mileage?... ..... no wonder he bought himself a duramax he knows nothing about diesels :D

What size of truck is it?? Who makes it?? What transmission does it have??

It could be one of a couple of things, 2 speed rear axle or remote shift auxiliary transmission. How to shift it varies from application to application and transmissions used.

Hoefler... ... ..... I dought it's a street truck with a 2 speed rear. You won't find those in our trucks.

There are 2 gear splitters I know of on the market. the US Gear manual shift, that is you shift when you want, and Gear Venders. Theirs works more like an automatic transmission.

To know how to use it, we need to know, as Hoefler said which one you have.

Cen,

I had a U. S. Gear underdrive unit in my old truck(Ford F250 6. 9 non-turbo 307 Dana)and it was the best thing I did for that truck. You shift just like a 2 spd axle. If your button is up your on the low side if down the high side. You can split the gears like that and that gives you a better range between each gear. So in 4th gear on the high side I still had a 307 rear end , on the low side it was close to a 384 and that really helped the pulling . I'd like to put one on my CTD but it has plenty of power and I really don't need it.

PS The U. S. Gear will work better with you E-Brake because it is all gear. The Gear Vendor is free wheeling on the high side and won't hold you back on deceleration. It also uses ATF and the U. S. Gear uses gearoil.

Right! I have my shifter wired so when the GV is engaged, the EB is disabled. Should never be used for brakeing. Also will not work below 20 mph.

ok

lets start with the obvious we are on a tdr site ie its a dodge turbo diesel :--) i dont own the truck i was looking at it for a company truck but when i drove it i couldnt really feel any difference. it was a manual transmission 6speed and the guy that had owned it makes gear splitters so the story goes. the truck is a 2002. do i call my boss and tell him hes nuts not to buy it? its a 3500 dually that will tow a 16 foot dump trailer with twin 12,000 lb axles

OK... ... . I think we all know what site were on. At least I hope so. I think the transmission was the question.

If you can't tell it's working, maybe it's not. The US Gear has a distinct clunk when it shifts. It also is operated with a 2 speed push/pull lever which is normally mounted on the gear shifter. I think this has already been explained. The real time use of a splitter is when you are starting up with a load. You will have a "half" gear between each OEM gear. I tow with a 5 speed, so the splitter is used a lot on startup. I also use it in the hills, when the speed is pulled down because of the gravity force exerted on the trailer as I progress up a hill. The half gear between gears is the difference between lugging the engine and over reving it. I like to keep my rpm in the 2000 range, and the splitter allows me to do that.

Just a guess, but I think I would probably need the splitter a good bit more than you would with a 6 speed. Still, I do not like lugging the Cummins, and this gives me a good head start on confidance in towing and ease of mind knowing the engine is in it's power band.

No , don't tell the boss not to get the truck. Learn to use it and you will learn to love it.
