What do the round shims do?
They go inside the adpater that GV provides before it slides over the original output shaft. You will use a straight edge to determine how much shimming you need to use. This keeps thrust from the output shaft damaging the GV unit.
I am just interested if you had to do this with your 5 speed installation??
No - mine was still in spec. If you did have to change the angle, it could be done with the blocks that sit between the springs and the axle.
I had a drive train shop build me a new shorter drive shaft and accepted his recommendation on the u-joint angles being in spec. So far, and after 50,000+ miles, no problems. I had also lowered my 4x4 2-1/2" by replacing the 5" block with a 2-1/2" block prior to installing the GV.
BTW - GV tells you NOT to use the steel/rubber gasket that is OEM between the XFR case and first section of output shaft. I have no idea why. I did not use it on my 5 spd. but have had it on my Auto for 29,000 miles. My 5 spd. developed a little leak with my silicone gasket, but so far the steel/rubber gasket has not leaked a drop. My warranty has expired on my GV so I didn't mind experimenting. I change the synthetic fluid every 10,000 miles. Takes just a little over a quart. Before installing on the Auto, I disassembled the sump according to the manual and cleaned the strainers. They really weren't dirty, but it made me feel better anyhow.
