I am going to order a 2005 ctd with the 48re. I plan on running 35 inch tires. I won't be doing any towing. I want to get the best mileage for this combination. Do i want to order 4. 10 gears or would the 3. 73 ratio be better?

Thanks for the advice. :)

ER

35's with an auto don't even think about definetly 4. 10"s. Alot of the members have never driven with the 4. 10's I've had both. If you go with 3. 73's you will almost have a 2:0. 1 ratio your truck won't be able to get out of it's own way. Overdrive?? you might aswell remove it because you'll never use it. Or if you do use O/D you'll be doing 80 plus miles an hour.

IMHO

If you plan on running 35s get the 4. 10 gears. I regret it everyday. I am seriously thinking of having my dealership swap my gears to 4. 10s.

I have a six speed w/ 35" Toyos. I really wish I had 4. 10's.

If you do the calcs, the stock tires with 3. 73 gears give you about the same overall ratio as 4. 10 gears with 35" tires.

4. 10's If you are going to get 4. 10's the auto then you'll love 4. 10's I wouldn't have it any other 4. 10's way. Oo. I Love my Truck, see signature. Oh yeah I'd get the 4. 10's if I were you.

I drove a truck with 4. 10s. With the narrow powerband of the cummins, it sure was out of breath quickly.

4:10s ,unless all you drive is HWY@ 75 MPH Plus,Also Plan on TC/VB upgrade the stock TC is not going to like all that rotating mass.

3. 73.

If you're not doing any towing you're better off with a gasser.

Curious, why do you say this... new to diesel's and I dont tow (yet, but plan on buying a new ToyBox for the dirt bikes)... .

Even if you dont tow, here's some benefits:

- Better Mileage than the equivalent Gasser

- Motor will last much longer (sold my 96 5. 9 Gasser at 130k becasue I was worried she was going to die, wouldn't have that concern for the CTD)

- Drives real nice with the CTD, equal too if not better than the 5. 9 Gasser (dont know about the hemi)

In agreement with you:

- Warm up time sucks!

- No short trips (1 mile to the store for beer :) )

- Gas a tad more $ here (not as bad as some places)

Just curious why you said get a gasser if you dont tow.

with 35's you'll be alright with 3. 73's if your not towing much, i ran my truck with this set-up for 38k mi. with no problems. empty most of the time but towed my 4- horse trailer (loaded) a couple times with no problems. i do wish i got the 4. 10 cuase i went to 37's, thats where i noticed a big diff.

one thing "giachino" forgot was RESALE value.

Tim; (a gasser ? dodge makes a gasser?)

I've got the 48 RE w/ 373 gears with 35 inch tires. As far as not being able to get out of it's own way???????? Whatever... I can't quite light 'em up from a stop like I could with the stock tires, but it seems to pull harder from a stop. Wider contact patch equals more traction. I have no probs with overdrive. Completely usable. 1900 RPM at 75 mph. No probs with the hills. I live in the montains of Montana, so a hill to me is a 7 to 8 percent grade going over the pass. Still has PLENTY of power. I don't do very much towing at all, maybe a couple times a year, but I love the fact that I get 16 mpg in a one ton quad cab truck with 35 inch rubber. Bone stock engine and transmission... . so far!
