Locking Fuel Cap

Hi all i have a 2001 2500 with 3. 42 factory gears, my question is im hauling a 28ft. wilderness super slider, 9k fully loaded are my gears too high for towing?

I find even with the Edge, i have to lift on grades, due to high EGTs.

A penny for your thoughts

Thanks guys and gals

3:42 is not a good choice for pulling heavy, but seeing how you have that ratio and you do pull somewhat heavy, to keep your EGT's down on a grade, try to keep your RPM's at about 2300 to 2500 no mater what your speed is. That should keep your EGT in check when pulling a grade. The Edge can also be causing your EGT to run high pulling a grade, that is one of two reasons I don't run performance programs, the other is warranty issues.

what setting are you running your edge on? I run on 3 unless pulling, then I lower it to 2, makes a big difference in my egt"s; also what transmission do you have? with my automatic if running 65 mph I have to lock out of OD to keep egt"s down, if I run 75 mph than the rpm's are such that egt's are not a problem, I usually don't run that fast loaded though

You should have 3. 54's or 4. 10's... . only available options in 01'. As mentioned previously..... drop out of OD and let the convertor lock and then cruise up the hills!!Don't let the R's or the loudness of the Cummins deter you from downshifting..... you will get better mileage towing that heavy and going up grades vs. lugging in OD and building heat. Easier on the transmission, the diesel, the A/C and no smoke either. Only downside is noise... . wives hate it but we all love to hear it!!

Ok yes 3. 54 gears is probably right. cool i didnt know if the converter locked with overdrive off, and yes with overdrive off egts drop to around 800 and it is noisy but i like it.
And it is nice to hear that im not hurting anything with the rpms around 2300-2500.
Thank you ACLayton, LBARTLETT, WOT, RVTKRN, for your responses. Oh its an edge EZ, and i move to level 2 from 3 when towing. Thanks again guys

glad to see it cooled right down for you, going from #3 down to #2 really helped lower my egt's too!

I run about 65 mph towing and sit back and relax

have fun
