Gelling and Fuel Additive

I have a 2004 (5.9) with a 98 gallon Transfer Flow system. Until this year, I drove it frequently. This year I haven't driven it. Winter temperatures here occasionally get to the mid-20s.

Should I be using a fuel additive to prevent the gelling I've heard about ? If so, what ?

Also where do you live? If you live in a northern area or were winter temps tend to be prevalent, than the fuel may already have winter additives in the diesel fuel.
I would worry a little if you filled up using B20 Diesel fuel before winter. If you did you may want to add a biocide type fuel additive to kill any microbes in the fuel such as bacteria and or fungus.

I am in the same boat as you now that I have retired. I may use my truck frequently for a week and then it might sit for a couple of weeks or more in the winter. Living in upstate NY our weather temps can run from just above zero to high 30s most winters. So I have used Howes Anti gel for years in my 2006 5.9. It also helps to keep my injectors clean. I've never had any problems and when I fuel up it's usually for a 1/2 tank or more. A lot of the farmers up my way use the Howes in their equipment. Runnings sells it and recently our Walmart has started carrying it. Runnings quite often has it on sale.

I have been using Power Service additive I buy at Walmart since shortly after I bought my truck in 03. The white bottle is for injector cleaning and anti-gel. The grey bottle is for injector cleaning and I use it in the summer. My truck started knocking pretty bad and the dealer recommended it. About a year ago Ram recommended using Power Service when previously they didn't recommend any additive. I have had good luck with it!

Actually Cummins (Fleetguard) has had their own brand of additive for many years. Since before common rail days. I used to use the anti gel during the winter in my storage tank.

Easy to remember: White=Winter, Silver=Summer

I usually run Howes or Power Service anti-gel if its staying below freezing, it works for me very well. Especially in my bed mounted transfer tank I use for tractors. My friends and family have gelled up during overnight stops running straight #2 from the south east to the colder parts of the country. It also helps to keep water out of your tank with a good water separator, a Fass or AirDog will polish the fuel through two filters as you drive separating the water and filtering the fuel over and over. My trucks don't get used all the time, so the aux fuel pumps have really done me well. Tanks stay clean even with low mile use.
