My alternator just took a dump a couple weeks ago, same as yours only the needle never moved once it went to Zip... ... I did have to jump the truck and works good now with new alt, bought a new one from advance auto, they have new and rebuilt, either buy a new one or one with more output.

5 miles from my house everything started working #@$%!#@$%!#@$%!. I'm changing alternator tomorrow unless somebody tells me not too

Geno's sells a rebuild kit, brushes and such if you want to rebuild the one you have, if you can keep it running till the kit shows up, or buy a new one and rebuild your old one for a spare. That is my plan only haven't ordered the parts yet... ... ... ... ...
Good luck.

Kenny don't buy a rebuild unless you buy it from a shop that does them on site the box auto parts stuff is crap ya great warranty not much good when you are broke down in the desert. Buy new or rebuild as DFerverda recommends

I would check your intake heaters to see if they are acting up (turning on for no apparent reason) that voltage swing 10 -14 volts is the same if the intake heaters were turning on.

P-bar- I stay away from rebuild for the reasons you stated,. Mule I don't think its a heater swing. I was driving when I posted on my cell so I kept it short. The "swing" was it would work for a few minutes - proper voltage and then it would drop back down again to the first line on the volt meter which I guess is around 10 or 12 volts. I made a stop about 15 minutes from my house and when I restarted it worked fine for the rest of the ride home. I'm gonna run out to the parts store in a few minutes I had em order one in for me this AM. I noticed an annoying static on the radio the last few days and was gonna try to look into it but I am now guessing that it may have been caused by the brushes arcing I will find out today. The most annoying part is that I worked for 11 days straight with a couple 16 hour days mixed in and was on my way to a much needed grouse hunt on my one day off this week. I made it to the same spot on the interstate where my transmission blew up 2 years ago on my way to a much needed Fathers day weekend ATV trip with the family. I think I'm gonna call in sick today. I'm having vision problems... . I cant see myself going to work.....

Well I put a rebuilt in and everything is fine. The parts store ordered in the rebuilt cause I forgot to mention I wanted new. Oh well... .
