I got a price for General tires for $99. 00 ea. Thats mounted, balanced, the whole deal.
Theyre 10 ply 235 85 16". M&S rated.
I like the idea of "longer legs" for the highway speeds. Standard replacement size (245 75) is about $5. 00 more.
Any input? How do these wear? How long do they last? Do they grip the road decently, how about in the rain??
Thanks in advance.

The patriot,

As mentioned in my past posts, the dealer I bought my used 97' from put on 285-35-16 General Grabbers. I have no reference other than running Generals years ago but I think they ride harshly and transmit a lot more vibration. I feel the vibration is in the tires because one of the first things I had done when I bought the truck is have the front end checked with tire balance.

Front end traction in the rain is very good, never hydro's. Front snow traction is good to fair. Rear snow traction is down right "hairy" but my truck is a dually. Dry weather traction is excellent, handling good.

At 27k with no rotation, fronts at 50% or less with minimal cupping, etc. (Never rotated) Rears about 25% but I like to play.

I run 70psi front, 60psi rear.

Generals I have had in the past seemed "rough" to me as well. Held up otherwise.

Hope this helps.

patriot,I went for 265/75 16. 5s last time, sure fill in those huge wheel wells better. They were Toyos.

Thanks guys. I knew I could count on the members of this board to help.

Rednut, I may end up doing that. How much could I save? I could be in Morrisville in about an hour if there is no traffic #ad

QRTRHRS, are you sure that's the right size you got? Seem awful BIG. If it is, the 35 series is probibally why you have a harsh ride. No sidewall!!

illflem, I looked into the larger tires, like you have, but I'd loose a few lbs capacity. I think the ones I looked at were LR E. The dealer told me the larger ones are "C" or "D" (I forget).
I seldom haul anything, but I hate to lose the capacity, in the event I have to.
I'd really like the Ricksons, but geez... . the money.

patriot,

Whoops, I meant to type 235's. 285's might rub a bit, huh? Took my portable power planer to my left index finger the other day. Big hunker bandage messes up my already rudimentary typing.

I've got 285's on my 96 2500 4x4 and never have been close to rubbing but I did notice it geared the beast up and my best power went from about 1500RPM to closer to 1750 to 1800RPM. Just something to consider if you are making the move to larger "boots" I'm dropping down one size next time I "retire"

Went up to 285/75/16's and the tires do rub a bit. But I have the factory 2-piece mudflaps ( See signature ). If you add aftermarket wheels then the rubbing will be more pronounced. I think I will go down to the 265's next go around. Don't want to lift the truck.
