I have an intermitent check engine light coming on. The code reads #41... ... ... An open or shorted condition detected in generator field control circuit... .

Voltage has started to fluctuate between 12 and 14

Questions

1) In other words is this a bad altenator?

2)Are the altenators rebuildable; Change brushes?

3)Are Autozone altenators any good?

4)What can I check at home?Go slow,I am electrically challenged. Thanks in advance.

If you haven't already, check for good solid connections at the alternator - pay close attention to how solid the wire/plug connectors are attached to see if corrosion is present. I wouldn't rule out a bad battery, either...

Just a follow up... . Had Autozone check the batteries. Both were OK... They tested the Generator @ 2000 rpms it would only put out 45 amps. I went home pulled the generator and inspected the brushes. They were toast as was the armeture... . 233k miles, cant complain... . Got a remanufactured one with lifetime warranty for 149+tax. Oh well, guess its good for another 200k miles;)

YUP - those Nippondenso jobbies ain't CHEAP!

At least that is what was on my '91 - haven't looked that close on my '02... Glad you at least isolated the problem...
