Has anyone tried the Hitco exhaust blanket offered by Geno's Garage? They claim that underhood temps are reduced, but give no quantitative results. If anyone has tried this product, please give your interpretation of the reduced temps. This product may help reduce intake temps and increase the scavenging effect in the turbo. Thanks for the replies...

Michael, I have had the blanket installed for the past two years. My main reason for installing it was to reduce the temperature around the air box. Exactly how effective it has been in accomplishing this is hard to tell since I did not take actual measurements. My truck is modified with over 300hp and my exhaust temps are reasonable, so hopefully this has been one of the contributing factors.
After installation of the blanket, I noticed that it takes longer to reach shutdown temperature, so this confirms that it is retaining some heat in the manifold/turbo area. This is confirmed regularly as my wife has a 95 Dodge cummins that consistantly cools down about 1 to 2 minutes quicker than mine even though I have a 4" exhaust (from the turbo all the way back) and hers is stock 3" and no blanket.
I live in a predominately dry area but if it were installed in a humid area, I would worry about trapped moisture in between runs.
I don't know if any of this helps, but if there is anyting else I can answer, let me know.

Mike, I have had Geno`s garage exhaust blanket on for about 2 years now. I have never taken measurements to confirm cooler under hood temps, but in my experience its ALOT cooler. The filter on my Scotty Air system is cold to the touch after stop & go driving. I went one step further when I installed the blanket. I wrapped the exhaust end of the turbo and about 4 feet of the exhaust pipe with Thermo-Tech exhaust wrap. The blanket does not cover the turbo exhaust elbow. I wanted to finish the job right #ad

Overall the blanket is a high quality product. Its made of a heavy asbestos like material with wire mesh. The top side is a shiny mylar type material.

I can`t really say if a notice a performance gain, but I`m glad I got it #ad

Michael, I have had my blanket on for about a week now. After running 55-60 and than shutting down, I can place my hand on any part of the blanket without fear of burn. I feel that that HAS to be reducing under hood heat. In addition, seat of the pants feel of the truck, there seems to be just a hint less turbo lag and pulling the same uphill grades it seems to be a tad stronger. (my truck is box stock) This makes some sence, our new Coast Guard 47' patrol boats are powered by a new German Diesel, the manufacturer designed a special exh manafold to capture as much of the heat as possible as I am told it is the HEAT that makes the turbo spin. Hope this helps, I know I am glad Santa got me one for Christmas. Happy Rammin, Dave

I put Geno's exhaust blanket on my '98 about a year ago. I, too, took no pre-/post-measurements.
It seems to be cooler under the hood now. It also
seems just a tad quieter. And, yes, it does seem to take a while to cool down; a part-throttle drive easing across a car park in 2nd can get the EGT up to 450-500F, and can take half a minute or so to cool down to under 300.

For what it's worth, cruising on a level highway, I generally see around 500F after the turbo and around 10 PSI boost. But heading into a strong wind, I've seen the EGT rise to 700F and boost go up to 16-18 PSI. And climbing the hills of VA311 in 3rd with converter locked, I have seen the EGT approach 950F whilst accelerating from 30MPH.

It is an otherwise stock '98 12V 4WD.

Yes, the claim is that heat is kept in the exhaust manifold and that noise is reduced somewhat. These are beside the point. If the blanket keeps me from burning myself on the manifold just once, then it will have been worth the price. #ad
