This looks like a handy accessory however it also appears to be dangerous. Couldn't a rock or tree branch (while off road) hit the lever and release all your oil on the ground while you're driving? I'm not familiar with the location of the drain plug as I don't have my truck yet but if it's in the standard location (hanging on the bottom of the oil pan) then it seems like it would be easy to hit with something?

Thanks,

Ray,

I have one, however I don't do any off-roading. I modified mine to ensure that all the oil drains out. Here are some pictures of what I did.

The possibility of moving the lever by accident is not very likely. It has a notch that you have to lift up and pull it out of and then turn the lever. The body of the drain plug is pretty stout. It is protected by the front differential, it would take a direct hit from an awful big rock to really damage it. If this were to happen I don't think the oil pan would hold up either.

Hey by the way are you coming to "Diesel Thunder in Spokane" on Saturday the 18th?

Take care, Big Bob

Picking up my truck

BIG BOB,

I'm suppose to be up in Kellogg taking delivery of my truck on Friday the 17th or Saturday the 18th depending on how quickly they get the accessories on my truck when it arrives. We'll be staying in CDA at the inlaws for the weekend so if I can get the truck on Friday I'll try and get to Spokane on Saturday. Thanks for the info on the drain plug.

See ya,

I agree with Big Bob. I have had it for over a year and love it. I don't think going off-road would cause any problems.

I have seen them first hand on other vehicales and persoanlly did not like the design for several reasons, one is the accidental opening issue, but the big issue is it will extend up into the oil pan and therefore you wont get all your oil out. I know some people have modified theres by drilling holes in it to eliminate this problem. I just use a heavy duty drain plug. I just loosen it one turn and wait a few minutes and most of the oil will have drained, then i take it all the way out and let it sit for 20 minutes and ten i am sure ALL the oil is out. No mess and much safer.
